With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Zita Catherine Curran (Power) devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother, sister, and dear friend, on May 1, 2024. Mom was surrounded by her loving husband Ron and her children.
Zita was born on February 23, 1934 and grew up in Portugal Cove South and Trepassey on the beautiful Southern Shore of Newfoundland. Zita and Ron met in Trepassey and were married for 68 years. They spent the early years of their marriage living in Trepassey, and then moved to St. John’s where they both pursued their careers and grew their family to five children: Don, Terry, Dianne, David and Vernon.
Zita was a devoted teacher for over 35 years, taught in several small Newfoundland communities and in St. John’s, and helped develop the minds of many young students during her long teaching career. Many of her former students fondly remember Mrs. Curran as their primary school teacher. In her retirement, she and Ron enjoyed many winters down south and spent time at their cabin at Middle Gull Pond in the summer. They loved to entertain family and friends up at the cabin with a memorable meal and company.
Zita enjoyed her time playing bridge with her friends. She shared a special bond with her sisters Bernadette and Elizabeth and many close friends over the years.
Nanny loved and adored her grandchildren: Neesha, Michael, Shalini, Liam, Meghan, Ailish, Kathleen and Matthew. She was especially proud of all of them and their many accomplishments.
Leaving to mourn, devoted husband Ron; children: Terry (Louise), David (Erin), Dianne (Shawn) and Vernon (Lisa); sisters: Bernadette Kennedy and Elizabeth Doran; sister-in-law, Terry Belcourt; as well as a large circle of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. She is predeceased by cherished son Don; parents Kathleen and Patrick; stepfather Con Kennedy; brother Richard, parents-in-law Richard and Bridget Curran; and in-laws Christian Belcourt, Francis Kennedy, Edward Doran, Margaret LeBlanc, Catherine Graham, Leonie Kennedy, Beatrice Murphy, Mary O’Leary, Esther Kavanagh and Edward Curran.
The family would like to thank the nursing and PCA staff of Tiffany Village and Dr. Amanda Coleman for their special care, and sincere thanks are extended to dear family and friends who regularly visited Mom at Tiffany. These visits meant so much to her.
Cremation has taken place. Resting at Caul’s Funeral Home, 84 LeMarchant Road with visitation on Tuesday, May 7 from 12:00pm-3:00pm. A Celebration of Life will take place at 3:00pm from Caul’s Chapel, LeMarchant Road. All are welcome to celebrate Zita, Mom and Nanny’s life following.
