The Neufeld family will receive relatives & friends for visitation from 6:00 p.m.- 8:00 p.m. on Friday, May 17, 2024 at Henry Walser Funeral Home (507 Frederick Street, Kitchener – 519-749-8467). A funeral will be held in the funeral home chapel on Saturday, May 18, 2024, at 10:30 a.m. Those unable to attend, may join the family via live stream at www.henrywalser.com/live-streaming. All are welcome to join Erna’s family in fellowship and celebration with reception to follow and commitment at Parkview cemetery.
As expressions of sympathy, donations to the St. Mary’s Hospital Foundation- MRI Fund or the Grand River Hospital Foundation- MRI Fund would be greatly appreciated by the family (cards may be placed by calling the funeral home.)
Erna Neufeld:
Passed away on May 13, 2024, at St Mary’s Hospital, Kitchener , Ontario at the age of 70.
Loving devoted Mother to Rainer (Melanie) & Ryan.
The ultimate Oma to grand children Connor & Dillon.
Beloved Sister to Erica (Henry), Eleonora & Annemarie (Peter).
Predeceased by parents Cornelio (Neufeld) & Sara (Wall) and sister Hilda (Peter).
Some might be surprised to know that Erna being of Mennonite heritage was born in Brazil. The story goes that the Neufeld & Wall families lived peacefully for many generations in what is now the Russo/Ukrainian Crimean Peninsula area. However, world events would shatter the prosperity their ancestors had built as communism swept through what was then the Russian Empire and would later give way to the U.S.S.R. Communism wasn’t tolerant of the religious beliefs or prosperity that had been achieved and all was lost. Escaping Russia and communism Sara (Wall) & Cornelio (Neufeld) as children with their parents fled to Germany and later Brazil. Once in Brazil a new rebuilding began literally from nothing; sent with a few tools into the jungle of Brazil; it is said that they wept for their plight. Sara & Cornelio would grow up and eventually Marry and Erna would be born on July 13, 1953 in Colonia Nova, Bage (today called Colonia Nova, Acegua ).
Erna would grow up in a rural farm life in Brazil which she often recounted with great fondness. Speaking of; fearlessly riding horses in the fields, running from farm to farm to play with friends, playing pranks on neighbors and teachers, helping her mother with cooking and chores, milking cows, being vigilant for snakes & spiders (haha), enjoying large community gatherings with churrasco (bbq) and cooking & baking traditional specialities Zweibuk, Ralkocken, Riebleplotz , Verenece and more. Eventually a hard fall would mean Erna would need medical care which forced her father Cornelio to sell farm equipment to pay for her medical bills . This is what sparked the Neufeld family desire to move to Canada; to find better opportunities and get access to healthcare.
In 1968 Erna and most of the family would move to St. Catherines Ontario where the family would work in the fruit farms of that Area for a few years. Erna; would often recount that time with pride for how hard the work was but a few years after coming the family would resettle in Kitchener, Ontario following the winds of opportunity. There Erna would continue to mature into a young woman, meet an exciting man named Norm and have two children with him ; Rainer & Ryan.
Erna was completely devoted to loving her family. Singlehandedly raising her two successful sons was one of her greatest achievements. Erna, as a single mother, somehow managed to put her sons through private Christian school for a combined 26 years of tuition while staying at home to raise her boys … we still don’t know how she did it. During those years she would also take care of her mother (Sara) going to her house everyday to care for her. She would later say that her mother was her best friend.
Erna enjoyed her later years as the best Oma there ever was to her grandsons Connor & Dillon (Rainer & Melanie). MANY great memories were created at Oma Erna’s house from sleepovers to Christmas decorating to baking sessions.
Not only did Erna take care of her own family but she found others in the community to show love to. After her mother passed (Sara), Erna adopted a lonely and elderly widow in the neighborhood fondly known as “the Italian lady” (Maria) and helped her age gracefully until she could no longer live at home. Erna was constantly surprising her family by finding unlikely relationships. To assist in retirement expenses some years ago her sons’ rented rooms out in Erna’s home. While not initially happy with the idea, Erna quickly made her housemates part of her own family, came to love them and was sad to see anyone leave the household.
