We celebrate and remember an amazing man: our husband, Dad, Papa, brother, uncle, and friend. Howard Soanes was a strong man with a soft heart, who lived his life with courage, humility, and respect; he was the guy that would give you the shirt off his back. He was a gentle spirit that cared about others and was always available for a heart to heart at the butcher block or by the fire in the backyard when we needed to talk. Howard’s “let’s go for coffee” was a daily ritual. You could guarantee that you would find him at Tim Horton’s or a local coffee shop, taking time for conversations with old friends and new. No matter where he went there was always a coffee cup in his hand. Family was everything to Howard. Known as Papa the Bear, his growls were a mask to hide behind, which never fooled any of us because we knew the depth of his love by his all-embracing hugs and kisses. We remember his fun-loving ways, being pulled behind the truck on the back of a car hood in winter or setting off fireworks on the hill. Howard also loved to dance and is remembered for his Elvis moves on the dance floor and his belting out songs while driving his truck. Howard also loved sports and was one of the first men in town to ride his purple 10 speed bike to work, before biking was fashionable. He also loved back catching a game of baseball, roughing it up in a hockey game, and was caught playing badminton at Parkland Composite High School on Sunday nights after supper.
Growing up in Melfort, Saskatchewan, Howard moved to Edson in the fall of 1955 and came to town with his family on a tractor, with only his blue jean jacket on his back. He remained in Edson since then, with the love of his life, Effie. Throughout his life he took on countless jobs in many areas including his most recognized career as a butcher and meat processor. No matter what the job, he refused to recognize any hurtles and did not back away from any challenges. He was a man that did what had to be done and continued to put one foot in front of the other throughout his life, leaving us just the way he wanted to, with his boots on.
Howard is survived by his wife, Effie (Herbut) of 61 years; his children Tammy (Grant), Kelly (Julie), Frances/George (Brett); nine grandchildren: Christopher (Sarah), Grant Jr. (Ellen), Lindsay (Reid), Kaitlyn (Tyler), Randolph (Allison), Keallach, Lachlan, Ailie, and Cian; and 14 great-grandchildren with one more on the way: Seth, Anastasia, Hope, Kate, Eberle, Morrigan, Tomek, Vesper, Aspen, Marsali, Milo, Vera, Willem, Remi and baby (2024). Howard is also survived by one sister Joan (Harvey) and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Howard is pre-deceased by his parents, Charlie and Margaret (Parker) and his siblings Harold, Sylvia (Harold), Ken (Doris), Audrey (Russell), Arnold, and John.
Howard’s Celebration of Life
Monday, May 6th from 1pm – 4pm
To be held at Patsy Anderson and Patrick Paul’s farm
