A Life Well Lived
Reverend William Frederick Duffy
September 30, 1926 – December 8, 2017
Born in Toronto, the 3rd son of British immigrants, George Aloysius and Annie Mabel (nee Peters), also pre-deceased by siblings Audrey, Roland and Jim. Bill graduated from the University of Toronto in the early 50s and began what was to be a short career as an electrical engineer with Westinghouse. During his time at UofT, Bill discovered faith in Jesus Christ and his love for God and deep sense of gratitude became the deeply rooted center of and purpose for his life. Upon graduation, Bill felt a growing passion to share the gospel of Christ and a call to Christian ministry. After studies both at Knox College, UofT, and Presbyterian College in Montreal, he was ordained in 1956 to full-time ministry with the Presbyterian Church in Canada. Bill and his young bride, Lois, continued their journey together in Fort St. John, AB–Bill’s first church. He also served as chaplin for the Canadian military personnel working along that stretch of the Alaska Highway–Bill was proud to have taken officer’s training in the signal corps at Vimy Base, near Kingston, ON, in the summers during his undergrad years. Two years later, in 1958, he and Lois moved to Ottawa to embark upon 19 exciting years at St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church where they saw faith and leadership flourish and made many lifelong friends. Always interested in developing his understanding and practice, Bill received a Masters in Pastoral Studies through St. Paul’s University, Ottawa, during the Ottawa years. Then, answering a new call to minister at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Kingston, ON, they moved their family of four in 1977 where Bill continued 19 more fruitful years of preaching, teaching and pastoral care until his retirement. Forever energized and motivated by God’s grace, instructed by study and inspired through prayer, Bill continued to preach and actively pastor in Kingston area churches well into his late 80s; and, while officially and finally retiring a fourth time from pastoral duties at Bethel Associated Gospel Church in Kingston, after 60 years of active ministry, he continued to take great interest in the life of the church, family and friends and to mentor younger clergy, always offering supportive counsel and encouraging feedback.
Loved by so many, Bill was a loyal man who cherished his friends, a spiritual guide, a joyful, kind, and humorous father, friend of all chipmunks, pets and wildlife, a devoted husband and a passionate follower of Jesus. He spent several miraculous years riding the crest of a wave on borrowed time, thankful and intent to do his best. As he so wished, he was at home when God called him, one last time, to make his final journey home and enter peacefully into the joy of the Lord. Bill will be deeply missed by his wife Lois Jean, nee Sutherland, his children Karen, Sheila, Ian (Tracey), and Andrew (Ruth), and his grandchildren Ryan (Holly) and Jasmine, Joshua, Rebekah and Samuel, Collin and Annika. We are thankful for his life, for the deep love of God in his heart, and for his special place in so many others’ lives. We will miss you, Dad, until that day we meet again.

O’Reilly; Dr. J. Abunassar; and recently, Dr. C. McLellan and the three formidable teams on Davies 3 headed by Dr. P. DeJong, Dr. G. Adams and Dr. S. LaHaye who achieved remarkable success in their bid to keep Dad riding on the crest of that wave; and he did despite later setbacks; nurses, PCAs and others who made such a difference; the caring, attentive staff at the Waterford. Dad and family appreciated all of you.
The family will receive friends at the Robert J. Reid & Sons, “The Chapel on the Corner”, 309 Johnson Street (at Barrie Street), Kingston, from 4-8pm on Friday December 15, 2017. A private family service and interment will be held at Knox Presbyterian Church in Westport. A Celebration of Bill’s life will be held at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Kingston in the New Year.
