It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Thelma MacKenzie, (Nega) , who died suddenly on Tuesday, December 27, 2016, at 86 years of age.
Born in Glace Bay on December 19, 1930, she was the daughter of the late Adam and Maggie (Dunlop) Nega. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
She retired in 1993 from a life-long career with Scotiabank, Glace Bay and Sydney Mines, and continued to reside in Sydney Mines, where she attended St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church and was active in the affairs of the Ruth Mission Auxiliary. Throughout the years, she continued to be a member of St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church in Glace Bay, with a keen interest in the life and work of that congregation. She was Past Noble Grand of Jubilee Rebekah Lodge, No. 14, in Glace Bay.
Thelma is survived by her only daughter Cathy and her husband Bill Miller and loving granddaughter Kenzie. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews and sister-in-law Carmel Nega.
Besides her parents, Thelma was predeceased by her husband Clarke MacKenzie, brothers Hugh, Donald and William, and two sisters, Jane and Alice.
Visitation will be held Saturday, December 31, 2016, from 1:00-4:00 pm, in J. M. Jobes Funeral Home, 635 Main St., Sydney Mines. The funeral service will take place 11:00 a.m. Monday, January 2, 2017, at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Sydney Mines, with Rev Marion Barclay-MacKay officiating. Family flowers only. Donations to St. Andrew’s or St Paul’s, or a charity of your choice are suggested as memorials. Expressions of sympathy may be forwarded to Thelma’s family at www.jmjobesfuneralhome.com
