Obituary Overview
Stephen Smith
Stephen passed away on December 19, 2017 at home in Dartmouth N.S. He was suffering from a rare familial form of ALS. He was 63 years old.
Stephen was born in Scarborough Ontario. Upon graduating from high school Stephen attended the University of Guelph where he was granted his Bachelor of Science and his Master’s degrees. In 1979 Stephen moved to St. John’s Newfoundland where he took up a research position at the new Department of Fisheries and Oceans. Two years later, he moved to Nova Scotia where Stephen continued his research at the Bedford Institute of Oceanography. He worked on a variety of research problems that resulted in over 180 scientific publications, 52 of which were original research papers published in scientific journals.
In addition to chairing national and international committees, Stephen also organized a number of international conferences.
Stephen was an assistant editor with the ICES Journal of Marine Science and Associate Editor with the Canadian Journal of Fisheries and Aquatic Research.
In the last 16 years of his career, Stephen had the pleasure and privilege of leading the scallop research unit and developed partnerships with the fishing industry that led to developing sustainable fisheries and collaborative field projects.
Stephen retired after 36 years with the department and was awarded the Prix d’Excellence for Outstanding Career.
Stephen and his wife Susan continued to indulge their passion for travelling in their retirements and visited every continent except for Antarctica.
They were fortunate that their children and grandchildren have remained nearby. Stephen enjoyed his role of grandfather.
Stephen was pre-deceased by his parents, Charles and Marguerite (Chisholm) Smith of Burlington ON and by his sister in law Laurie (Piconke) Smith of Chicago.
Stephen is survived by his wife Susan, his son, Matthew (Jennifer), his daughter Shannon Doyle (Shaun) and his daughter Lindsay, all of Dartmouth.
Grandchildren Marissa, Marshall, Aeris, Liam, and Max.
Brothers, Gregory of Chicago and Michael of Toronto.
Sisters, Barbara Chapman (Randy) of Oakville and Theresa Welton (Rob) of Cambridge.
A reception will be held on Saturday December 23, 2017 from 10am to noon at Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main Street Dartmouth, N.S. B2W 3T9. Family flowers only, donations to the ALS Society of NS in Stephen’s memory would be welcome
