Obituary of Silver Cartwright.
Silver Cartwright of Little Fort, BC passed away on the evening of November 12, 2017 while at Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops, BC. Silver suffered a stroke and passed on peacefully after a short stay in the hospital.
Silver is survived by her loving family of four children and six grandchildren. Eldest daughter Kim Cartwright, (Little Fort, BC) granddaughters Merrilee and Tullea Bays (Malawi, Africa and Vancouver, BC), daughter Gai Lawson and husband Rob of Bolton, Ont., son John and wife Jocelyn, grandson Liam and granddaughter Kate (Kamloops, BC), youngest daughter Anne Cartwright and husband Mike Burrows, grandson Caleb and granddaughter Niomi, (Barriere, BC). Silver was pre-deceased by her loving husband of 59 years Robert Lewis Cartwright (Bob) who passed April 19, 2013.
Silver was born Nuan Jim on January 6, 1918 at Lillooet, BC. Silver is thought to be an English translation for Nuan, which meant something brilliant or shiny. The family located permanently to the Little Fort area in 1919, where Kam Kee Jim (Silver’s father) established the Jim Man Lee Store in 1919 (which has been operated continuously since that time). In her formative years she worked in, and assisted in operating the store with her sister Marena and brother Loy. Silver attended grade school in Little Fort with additional schooling at St. Anne’s Academy in Kamloops.
In the early 1950’s Silver met Robert Lewis Cartwright (Bob) and in 1954 eloped to Vancouver to be married although “mixed marriages” in that era were frowned on. In 1955, they purchased ranch property near Little Fort (current residence) and in that same year established a Fishing Camp, named after their first daughter Janice Kim (Janice Lake Fishing Camp), of which Silver and family operate to this day.
Silver was a caring, insightful, fiercely independent person that practised true unconditional love. She had a great love of family and family history, the outdoors and of course fishing. Silver helped her brother Loy start Taweel Fishing Camp in 1938. She and Bob started their own fishing camp in 1959, through which they raised their family and fostered many friendships, near and far. Her loving support, enduring wit and the need to photograph everything will most certainly be missed, by family and friends.
We would like to thank the staff at Royal Inland Hospital for their unwavering support in attending to our mother in her time of need, of which we are eternally grateful. The Cartwright family would also like to acknowledge those that came to Silver and Bob’s assistance during their final years, enabling them to reside at home on the Ranch and fishing camp as they desired.
Silver’s wishes are to be cremated with remains interred at Little Fort Cemetery. A celebration of life will be announced for the summer of 2018. Condolences may be sent to family at DrakeCremation.com
