Reverend Gerald Keindel CSsR

Obituary
Fr. Gerald “Tex” Keindel died on the morning of August 14th at
Villa Marguerite in Edmonton at the age of 82. Born in Tessier, SK and
raised in Saskatoon, he joined the Redemptorists, making his first
profession of vows Sept. 15, 1956. He was ordained at Holy Redeemer
College in Edmonton on June 17, 1962 after studies in St. Mary’s College,
Brockville, Woodstock, ON, and Holy Redeemer College seminary in Windsor, ON.
Fr. Tex, as he was known, obtained a number of degrees during
his life: B.A., B. Th., S.T.L., B. Ed and Masters in Pastoral Counseling.
He taught for a year at HRC, Edmonton but spent most of his career
ministering in parishes. He was pastor at St. Gerard’s, Yorkton (1969-75)
and St. Mary’s, Beaverlodge (1981-90) and at both of these parishes he
oversaw the building of new churches. He also served in Redemptorist
parishes in Winnipeg, Moose Jaw, and Saskatoon. In 2002 he moved to Villa Marguerite where he assumed many of the administrative responsibilities for the community, the Redemptorist Centre for Growth and the Clement House property.
Fr. Tex was a steady, dedicated presence wherever he went. He
had a special concern for the poor and marginalized. In his final years as
he slowed physically he took up knitting—preparing scarves, vests and
toques to be used in winter by people in need.
He was predeceased by his parents, Edwin and Veronica (nee
Clarkson) Keindel. He is survived by his brother, Vince (Saskatoon), and
his sister, Mary Lucki (Unity) and several nieces and nephews.
The Funeral Mass will take place in the chapel at Villa Marguerite
(9810 – 165 St.) at 10:30 am on Friday, August 18th followed by interment
at Holy Cross cemetery. There will be a prayer service on Thursday evening
at 7 pm, also in the chapel which Villa Marguerite has so graciously put at
our disposal. We are most grateful for the care of Fr. Tex’s medical
personnel, as well as the kindness of the staff at Villa Marguerite during
his 15 years in residence. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to
the Marion Centre (10528 – 98 St. NW, T5H 2N4) in Edmonton.
