With heavy hearts we honour the life and accomplishments of Paul Ajibe Chalifoux. Our hearts are heavy as we cherish the memories of the man who dedicated his life to being a devoted friend, father, and husband. We honour the integrity and collaborative spirit that he brought to everything he did.
Paul was born to Armand and Stella Chalifoux in Morinville, Alberta on April 15, 1942. He was the youngest of five brothers, and he spent his youth playing pick-up sports and enjoying boiled dinners in the kitchen of the Alberta Hotel. In his teens he spent many days enjoying the family cabin at Alberta Beach.
Paul met his future wife Margaret McPhee on a blind date in 1962; they married in 1966 and settled in their beloved St. Albert where they raised four children. Paul pursued a career in education for over 20 years; first as a history teacher, then as the Vice Principal of St. Albert Catholic High School.
Paul spent many years as a minor baseball coach and dedicated community volunteer. He served with the Chamber of Commerce, St. Albert Victim Services, the Rotary Club, and the Sturgeon Hospital Foundation. He was also appointed to the Fairview College Board of Governors, the Alberta Life Insurance Council, the Alberta Municipal Government Board, and the College of Dental Technologists of Alberta.
He was proud to be elected as an Alderman in the City of St. Albert in 1992, fulfilling a long-love of politics that stretched back to his first election campaign, for the federal Liberal party in 1968. He was elected Mayor of St. Albert in 1998 and again in 2004.
Paul was honoured with many accomplishments, awards and accolades over the years; including a Citizen of the Year award he shared with his wife Margaret in 1987, an Alberta Centennial Medal in 2005, and recognition as a City of St. Albert Community Builder in 2015. Awards and accomplishments aside, Paul left a legacy to his family, friends and beloved city through his love of community and his belief in service before self.
Paul is survived by his children: Rob (Cortney), Michelle, and Dan (Shayla); and his loyal companion Willow.
He is predeceased by his wife Margaret, and son Richard
