Obituary Overview
Forever In Our Hearts
McRAE, Moira Gertrude
October 29, 1927 – December 1, 2017
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, great Gran and Auntie Moira on Friday, December 1, 2017 at the age of 90 years.
She will be forever missed but remembered by her children: Chris (Woody) Knebel, Murray (Jane) McRae, Anne (Bill) Outhwaite, and Sandy (Allison) McRae ; her 6 grand-children: Jade (Brenley) Elliott-McRae, Laura Knebel (Rob) Comey, Jessica (Chris) Leitao, Jeff (Michelle) Mark, Brody Outhwaite and Taylor McRae. She is also survived by her 6 great grand-children: Coleton, James, Tatum, Hazel, Neko and Levon and her 2 nieces Susan Malo and Corae Alden. She was predeceased by her loving husband of nearly 62 years, Jim (Mac), her precious grandson, Duncan McRae, her parents, Joe and Jessie Edgington, her sister, Sheila Malo and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins on both her side and the McRae side of the family. She leaves behind some very good friends both old and new to mourn her loss.
Moira was born in Lacombe, Alberta where she went to school and participated in sports and dance, played the piano and made lots of good friends. She met Jim at a dance in Gull Lake, fell in love, then married in 1949 and moved to Calgary when he was hired at Chevron Oil Co. They had many great years enjoying Stanco club activities and met a lot of life-long friends there. They moved to Altadore, where 3 of their kids were raised, and became Charter members of Southminster United church, again where they met life-long friends. Moira learned to cook and sew and her family and friends benefitted from her expertise. Hurray for school clothes, costumes, apple muffins, brownies, butter tarts, and chocolate chip cookies and cake. Yum! She and Jim sang in the church choir, played bridge and eventually took up Golf. Moira was an avid competitive player during the years she played! She and Jim were Charter members of the Valley Ridge Golf Club until it closed, and many special events were held there. They moved to University Heights where Sandy grew up and where some of their best friends lived. They joined Parkdale United Church and again met new wonderful friends. They took their first exotic trip to Mexico for their 25th anniversary, then started to travel in earnest, taking cruises to Panama and Alaska as well as going to New Zealand, Scotland, Holland and of course Sun Lakes, Arizona where they enjoyed another life for over 20 years. They met more new folks golfing, playing, Bridge, attending church and their social calendar was full. Moira loved it there and it was tough saying goodbye in 2011 when Jim passed away. She spent the last number of years living in the Symphony Manor in Shawnessy and most recently in Tudor Manor in Okotoks where she passed away. In typical social Moira fashion, she made more friends in both places, whether staff or residents. She was a warm, loving, caring person who was welcoming to friends, family and strangers. She had a soft heart and there were always extra guests invited to the McRae family dinners which were plentiful over the years. She loved babies and was overjoyed when she had little ones around. She was a great mom who listened, disciplined when necessary, comforted, consoled, applauded, nourished, complimented, sympathized, remonstrated occasionally but unconditionally loved her kids. She considered her family to be her greatest achievement! She was also a very strong woman physically, enduring and surviving a Pace Maker, a TAVI procedure, and 2 knee and 1 hip replacement surgeries. She was like the Energizer bunny who kept on bouncing back even if not quite hopping along. She had a great memory and that wealth of knowledge about her family’s heritage will be sorely missed.
Moira will be interred at the cemetery of Eden Brook Memorial Gardens in a private family ceremony followed by a memorial service for anyone who wishes to attend to celebrate her life, at the Tudor Manor (200 Sandstone Drive) in Okotoks at 1:00 pm on Saturday Dec. 9.
Donations can be made in her name to the MS Society of Canada. Thanks to the staff at Tudor Manor for all their care and support. You have been much appreciated.
