Mary Theresa Pickup
It is with sadness but gratitude for a long life well-lived, that the family announces the peaceful passing of Mary Theresa Pickup at the QEII in Halifax Thursday Novenber 23, 2017. Born in Mulrave, Mary was the only daughter of the late Viola May (Doucette) Theriault. She grew up in Charlottetown, PEI and Alder Point, Cape Breton. Her marriage to Dennis L. Pickup was the beginning of a long career of working side by side with him in business from Sydney Mines to Truro and finally to Port Hawkesbury.
Mary’s interests included travel, curling, bowling, golf at Dundee and Ingonish, camping with family and friends, and her pets. In her lifetime, she adopted and cared for many little dogs and countless kitties who were part of the family. She was also a passionate gardener, devoting countless hours to the flower gardens surrounding her home. Having a keen interest in politics, Mary was a lifetime member of the Liberal Party, both provincially and federally. Until last winter, when she moved to Halifax to be closer to family, she was a member of St Joseph’s Catholic Church in Port Hawkesbury and the Evergreen Seniors Club.
Mary leaves behind her only son, Art and his wife Brenda, Windsor Junction, her cherished grandsons, Denny (Heather), Bedford and Scott (Mélanie), Halifax. She is also survived by her precious great grandchildren, Alec and Samuel, Delia and Camil. Also survived by many nieces, nephews cousins and close friends.
Besides her mother, Mary was predeceased by her step-father, Alphonse Theriault, her husband Denny Pickup, and an infant daughter, Pamela Theresa Pickup.
In keeping with Mary’s final wishes there will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place and a family mass will be celebrated Thursday, November 30th at St. John Vianney Catholic Church, Lower Sackville. Interment of ashes will be Friday December 1st at 1 pm in St Joseph’s Parish cemetery, Port Hawkesbury. The family invites friends to join us at this service to say our final farewell to Mary. A reception with a light lunch and refreshments provided by the CWL, at the St Joseph’s Parish hall will follow the internment service.
The family wishes to acknowledge with much appreciation, the care given to Mary over the last number of years by Homecare in Port Hawkesbury who allowed her to remain in her own home for so long, the staff of 4th floor Manor at Northwood as well as the caring doctors and nurses of 8.4 QEII.
All arrangements are under the professional care and guidance of Green’s Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury.
