Smith, Mary Margaret(Smallcombe), passed away on November 4, 2017. The daughter of the late John and Margaret Smallcombe, Mary was born in Harbour Grace, NL in 1935. She is predeceased by her husband, Gordon Smith of Lockeport, NS, whom she met when he was stationed with the RCAF in Torbay NL. Mary and Gordon moved to Shelburne upon his retirement from the Canadian Armed Forces in 1978. Mary enjoyed a more than 30-year career working for the Department of National Defence in several locations in Canada and overseas including Torbay, Gander and St. John’s NL, Baden-Baden Germany, Clinton, Ontario, and Halifax, Barrington and Shelburne, Nova Scotia. She retired upon the closure of CFS Shelburne in 1995. She truly loved Thursday night BINGO at the Lion’s Hall and watching curling tournaments on TV. It was hard for her to give up going to Thursday BINGO when her health no longer allowed it, but she managed to keep watching the curling tournaments almost through to the end, even if they were telecast very late at night or very early in the morning. Mary is survived by her children, Deborah Smith, Shelburne; Kathryn Smith (Robert Parent), Winnipeg, MB; Charles Smith (Leona), Calgary, AB; and Carolyn Thibodeau (Paul), St. John’s, NL, as well as six grandchildren; Joey, Kyle, Eric, Charlie, Connor and Georgia, and 1 great-grandchild, Cole. She is also survived by 3 step-sisters, all who reside in Newfoundland and Labrador; Patricia Atkins (Sam), Mary Corbett (Joe) and Dorothy Wakeham (Kevin), and 2 sisters-in-law, Shirley Smith, Lockeport and Helen MacKenzie, Kemptville, On. A heartfelt thank you to the amazing VON nurses who provided professional services and care to our mother for more than a year and a half (as well as lots of laughs and conversation that she thrived on). You are angels, one and all. A thank you also to the nursing staff at Roseway Hospital, and Carolyn Smith for always being there. Cremation has taken place under the direction of H.M. Huskilson’s Funeral Homes & Crematorium. Funeral service and viewing will not be held. A celebration of life will take place at a later time. In lieu of flowers, it is her children’s sincere wish that memorial donations are made to the Victorian Order of Nurses, Tri-County(Counties of Shelburne, Digby and Yarmouth). On-line donations at www.von.ca/en/donate-now and select VON Tri-County at “gift designation”. Donations by mail or e-mail at www.von.ca/sites/default/files/le general printable e.pdf and note “direct my donation to VON Tri-County”. On-line condolences may be sent to:hmhuskilson@ns.aliantzinc.ca or you may sign the guest book at:www.huskilson.net
