We are sad to announce the passing of Maria Viola Hochel at the age of 72.
She leaves to mourn her husband of 53 years Frank Hochel; daughters Ingrid Hochel Steciuk (Ron), Renata Hochel (Larry), and Eva Lendrum (Johnny); son Frank Hochel (Lisa); grandsons Neil Burnell, Frank Levi Hochel; granddaughter Jessica Hochel; and great-grandson George Irvine Burnell. She is also survived by her sister Pavla Ryba in Slovakia, along with numerous other family in Slovakia. She will be missed by close friend Zuzana Pales and family, along with good friend Mike Maxi.
She is predeceased by her father Jozeph Biclka and her mother Terezia Pšenka.
Maria was born January 8, 1945 in the small town of Trencin, Czechoslovakia. Maria started working in Europe, milking cows from early morning til dawn, then at a sewing factory as a seamstress where she met Frank Hochel and they soon fell in love.
Maria and Frank decided to leave Czechoslovakia with three small children and go to Austria where they stayed with friends for 6 months. They then went to Vienna where they took a place to Canada, landing in Montreal on January 27, 1970.
Maria worked a variety of jobs through her life; Executive Housekeeper at the old Ramada Inn on Pembina Highway, the Fort Gary Hotel, the Valhalla Inn in Thunder Bay, Ontario, and the Gull Harbour Resort at Hecla Island. She then worked as a caretaker.
She also enjoyed needle point, knitting, crocheting, and sewing. She often made outfits for her children when they were young. She enjoyed baking cakes and making homemade chocolate at Christmas. She would have the TV on, playing the movie “The Sound of Music” in the background.
Maria loved going to church and being involved with Folklorama and the making of the outfits, helping with the dancing, the music, and being in the kitchen helping the ladies with preparing the food. She loved church, especially around Christmas and Easter.
Maria enjoyed life, driving for hours, taking trips, and spending time with her family, and watching her grandchildren grow into adults.
