Margaret Hazel O’Connell
Margaret Hazel O’Connell (nee Wenzel) passed away on Wednesday, December 27, 2017, at the age of 95 years.
She was born to Catherine “Rose” Wenzel and Wesley Norman Wenzel at Kleskun Hill, AB, on April 17, 1922.
Hazel moved with her family to the Rio Grande area in 1925. She attended the one room school house/community hall a short distance from home. At 19, she married Frank O’Connell. They relocated to Timmins, ON, where Frank went to work in the mining industry. When they discovered city life and mining were not to their liking, they returned to farming near Rio Grande in 1942, where they raised a family of 4 sons and 2 daughters.
She leaves behind her daughter in-law Bev; sons: Jerry (Diane), Les (Val), and Don (Karen); daughters: Corinne (Dennis) Cowan and Shannon; as well as 17 grandchildren and 29 great grandchildren.
Hazel was predeceased by her husband Frank in 1994, eldest son Jim, infant son Daniel, son in-law Paul Rokosh, 2 brothers, a sister, and Frank’s 8 siblings.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, January 2, 2018, at 11:00am, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, in Beaverlodge, AB (1107 1 Ave West).
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Heart and Stroke of Canada (200 1212 West Brodway, Vancouver, BC, V5H 3V2) or Canadian Cancer Society (200, 325 Manning Road NE Calgary, AB, T2E 2P5).
