Marden Homer Young was born on July 10, 1923 in Bowsman, Manitoba and became deceased on Saturday, September 30, 2017. He served in WWII from 1941 – 1946, during which time he served in Canada, England, France, Germany, Holland, Belgium and NW Europe. He was awarded the 1939/45 Star, Defense Medal of Britain, France & Germany Star, The Dutch Medal of Holland, CVSM & Clasp. He met Thelma Maud Helen Hallier in London, England and they were married in the UK on August 18, 1945. Both returned to Winnipeg, Canada in 1946, where Homer was honorably discharged from the military with the rank of Staff Sergeant. He enrolled at the University of Manitoba at Winnipeg and graduated in 1951 with a BSc degree in Geology & Physics. Following graduation, Thelma and Homer came to Calgary when Homer joined a major oil company who were conducting oil and gas exploration in Alberta. He later joined Kenting Exploration as their Chief Geophysicist where he was part of the Polarquest Arctic Exploration Group. Homer later joined Champlin Petroleum Company of Fort Worth, Texas as their Chief Geophysicist for Canada. Approximately three years later, Homer founded Bowsman Exploration Ltd. He was a member of the Assoc. of Prof. Engineers, SEG, CSEG, ASPG, CSPG, the 400 Club, Calgary Petroleum Club, Royal Canadian Legion, Branch# 264, and St. David’s United Church. Homer’s name was selected for publication in the “Who’s Who In Alberta” (1994 – 1998 First Edition), an organization sponsored by the Historical Society of Alberta.
He leaves to mourn his wife, Thelma; son, Philip (Wanda); daughter, Catherine (Tim); grandsons, Michael (Janine), Christopher (Angela); granddaughters, Dana (Adam) and Jenna (Daniel); great grandsons, Owen, Jacob and Lucas; great granddaughter, Aria and other family members in Canada and England.
A Funeral Service will be held at St. David’s United Church, 3303 Capitol Hill Crescent NW, Calgary, AB on Tuesday, October 10, 2017 at 1:30 pm.
