Lawrence Laurie S. Davie

Lawrence Laurie S. Davie 2 juillet 1924 – 2 décembre 2016

Lawrence (Laurie) Stuart Davie passed away peacefully with family at his side, on December 2, 2016, at the QE II Health Centre. He was pre-deceased by his wife Dorothy (Lister) and an infant daughter.
Laurie was born in Manchester, England on July 2, 1924, an only child to Harry Stuart and Alice Louise (Buckle) Davie. He spent the war years at Dorman Long Steel Factory in Redcar, Yorkshire, while a member of the Home Guard, and received his Mechanical Engineering Certificate from Constantine College, University of York. Laurie joined the British Merchant Marines, and under the flag of the Peninsular & Orient he traveled the world, particularly the South Seas, also regularly visiting the island of Tristan da Cunha in the South Atlantic – ‘the loneliest place on Earth.’
Laurie and Dorothy met in Redcar in 1950 while she was over from Canada visiting family, and he immigrated to Canada to be with her. They were married in 1951 in Red Deer, Alberta, honeymooning on the Transcontinental from Red Deer, to Parry Sound, Ontario, where they first settled. They had four boys and lived and worked throughout Eastern Canada, New York, Alberta, and British Columbia, before retiring to Halifax.
Laurie loved to be active, and he and Dorothy spent many a happy hour walking the trails of Point Pleasant Park.
After Dorothy passed away in 2002, Laurie remained active. A life-long lover of Sunday drives, he donated his time driving his beloved Buick Century for Meals on Wheels, working with that organization for several years.
Laurie maintained his own apartment until just a few years ago, when circumstances made it more practical for him to move first to Northwood, and then to Arborstone Enhanced Care near the Dingle, another favorite walking area.
Laurie is survived by his sons Stuart (Laura), Robert (Iris), Ian (Linda) and John (Margaret), grandchildren Paul, Erin, Eric, Sean, Gwen, Janet, Claire, Jack and Emma, and one great-grandchild Piper, with two on the way.
As per his wishes, Laurie has been cremated, with his ashes to be scattered at a later date in Middlesbrough, England, by his sons, where he will be reunited with Dorothy.
Many, many heartfelt thanks to the nurses and doctors of the QE II Health Centre, and particularly the staff of Arborstone Enhanced Care 4th floor.
A memorial service will be held at Atlantic Funeral Home, 6552 Bayer’s Road, Halifax, on Tuesday Dec 6th at 7:00 pm.
A donation may be made in Laurie’s memory to a charity of your choice.
