Obituary of John New
John’s family is sad to announce that he passed away at Freeport Hospital on Friday, November 24th, 2017. We thank those who tended him there for their thoughtfulness.
He will be sorely missed by his wife, his children, and his 17 grandchildren all of whom gave him great delight. He was predeceased by his parents and a brother. His remaining brother and sister, and his nephews and nieces in Australia remember him lovingly.
John was born in Korea on 10th February, 1936 and grew up in Korea, England and Australia. He graduated from the Universities of Melbourne and Toronto and has taught and thought at Stanford, the University of California at Santa Barbara, the University of Cambridge and the University of Waterloo where he served for a time as Acting Dean of Arts and Chairman of the History Department. He established a PhD program in history, founded the journal Historical Reflections and was the author of the books Anglican and Puritan: The Basis of Their Opposition and The Renaissance and Reformation: A Short History.
John loved to travel and his historical interests led the family around Europe in a camper and later, his love of boats carried them about England and Wales in a canal boat. His many stories will keep him alive in the memories of those who knew him.
There is a gathering arranged for family and friends at the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King St. S., Waterloo on Friday, December 1st, 2017 from 3 to 5 p.m.
As expressions of sympathy, donations can be accepted for Doctors Without Borders or the Regional Food Bank by contacting the funeral home at www.erbgood.com or 519-745-8445.
