Obituary Overview
John Somoya
John Somoya of Calgary, Alberta, passed away on the morning
of December 19, at the University Hospital in Edmonton, one month
short of his 85 birthday. John is survived by his wife, Lillian (nee Thielens)
of 60 years, as well as two sons, Peter (Carole) and David, along with 4
grandchildren, Christopher, Kathryn, Stephanie and Jennifer. He is predeceased
by his parents, Joseph and Elizabeth, as well as older brother Joe, and younger
brother, Bill.
John left the mining community of Bellevue to attend Red
Deer Composite HS. While attending class he worked for AGT and played hockey on
numerous local teams. Upon HS graduation, John entered SAIT for his electrical
trade papers. His apprenticeship was at Cunningham Electric in Red Deer. He
married the love of his life, Lillian, in 1958 and soon after joined Hudson Bay
Oil & Gas. Working in the pipeline division (Rangeland) took the young
couple to Olds & Pincher Creek. He then left HBOG to work as a provincial
electrical inspector in Camrose. His next career move was to join Quadra
Engineering in Calgary, eventually opening his own business, Mount-View
Electric. His youngest son, David, joined him in business and they enjoyed a
successful 30+ year working relationship.
John was a loving father and active community member
through the Knights of Columbus and Elks service organizations. He participated
on hockey & softball teams and coached numerous hockey teams throughout
Alberta. His love of sports was passed on to his sons.
