2017
Johanna Josephine Lawrence
With great sadness, we announce the passing of Johanna
Josephine Lawrence, age 87, of Villa du Repos, Moncton, on Monday,
December 18, 2017. Born in Bantry Bay, County Cork, Ireland, she was
the daughter of John and Mary Collins (nee Sullivan). Johanna was
fluent in Gaelic and Spanish and prior to coming to Canada, she worked
for Lloyds of London as an interpreter in Bantry
Bay.
Johanna immigrated to Canada in 1951
to help provide care for her young nieces, met her husband, Don and
the rest is history. Although she returned to visit her beloved
Ireland several times, Moncton became her adopted home and she made a
wide circle of friends, with whom she remained in contact throughout
her life. In early years, Johanna and her husband were strong
supporters of the Main Brace, Lions Club and Legion. Johanna was a
member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Legion for many
years.
A lover of the music of the Big Band
era, Johanna was a wonderful dancer. She continued to enjoy music all
her life. Knitting was another passion and over the years, she created
many beautiful Mary Maxim creations and countless hats, scarves,
mittens and baby clothes. Reading, summers at the cottage and
travelling were other great interests. For many years, she and her
family enjoyed annual trips to the New England states to visit
relatives in the Boston area.
Although dementia reduced her
cognitive functioning in later life, Johanna remained determined and
outspoken to the end. Her passing leaves a gap in the lives of those
she touched. Johanna will be greatly missed by her only son, John of
Moncton; her nieces, Dr. Joyce Kennedy-Leslie (Bill) of Halifax, NS
and Mary Louise Kennedy of Brisbane, Australia; great nieces, Kerry
Jean Turner (Peter) of Tantallon, NS and Joellen Leigh Gillis (Paton
Francis) of Bedford, NS; great great niece, Jenna Turner and great
great nephew, Ewan Francis. Johanna is also survived by a sister, June
Stevens of England.
In addition to her parents, Johanna
was predeceased by her husband, Donald MacKenzie Lawrence (1976);
sisters, Judy, Betty, Ellen and brother,
Daniel.
Her family would like to extend their
thanks to Dr. Alan Munroe for his many years of care, the staff at
Manoir Notre Dame and most recently, the staff at Villa du
Repos.
In keeping with Johanna’s
wishes, there will be no visitation. A private burial for the family
will be held at Elmwood Cemetery in the
spring.
Fergusons Funeral Home, 1657 Mountain
Road, Moncton (858-1995) in care of
arrangements.
In memory of Johanna, donations to
Diabetes Canada would be appreciated. Private online condolences for
the family can be made at
