James Switzer Freeborn, of Edmonton, passed away at the Kipnes Centre For Veterans on October 19, 2017. Jim was 97. In accordance with Jim’s wishes, cremation has taken place.There will be a memorial service at the Kipnes Centre For Veterans in January 2018.
Jim was predeceased by his father Switzer (1965), his mother Annie (1976), his wife Win (1993), brother Bob (1974), sister Betty Green (2013), brother John (2015) and brother Bruce (2016).
Jim is survived by his sons, Robert David James (Rene) and Christopher Bruce (Dawna),all of Calgary. Jim had two granddaughters, Paige and Chelsea, two grandsons, Jeremy and Geoff, and three great grandsons, Wyeth, Etienne and Zayd. Jim is survived by dear friends Donna and Lance Oakes and family.
Jim was born in Magnetawan, Perry Sound, Ontario. When Jim was one year old his family moved to a farm outside Calgary, and as their family grew they moved into the city.
First Lieutenant James Switzer Freeborn came from a family of military history. Jim went to war at the young age of 19, enlisting in the Canadian Army and serving in the Royal Canadian Artillery. He spent seven years in the forces, in military operational theatres in Europe and North Africa during World War II and post war service in Europe. Jim met and married Win (Moore) in England during the war, and in 1947 they moved to Calgary, Canada, and then relocated to Edmonton to settle down. He worked as Power Engineer until his retirement in 1984.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial donations be made to Ronald McDonald House, 7726 – 107 Street NW, Edmonton, T6E 4K3. Thank-you.
We would like to extend our gratitude and appreciation to the medical staff of the Kipnes Centre For Veterans for your support and kindness to Jim over the past five years, and especially for your astute care in his final days. Our sincere THANKS to everyone.
