Who can turn the world on with his smile?
Who can take a nothing day, and suddenly make it all seem worthwhile?
Gerry was born in Zoeterwoude, the Netherlands. He was the youngest of nine children. He immigrated to Canada with his wife Betty in September 1951. He and Betty had five children: Cornel (Jane), Cathy (Wayne), Theresa (Mark), Angela (Michael), and Tracey (David) – a small family by Dutch standards. Happily, the family grew with the addition of 13 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. With his family and wife of 66 years by his side, Gerry died peacefully in his bedroom at Rutherford Heights Retirement Residence. His family would like to thank the staff for their sensitive care giving and the EMS Community Care Teams who orchestrated Gerry’s palliative care with the utmost of compassion.
A consummate storyteller and joker, Gerry has left all who knew him with a memory of his joyous spirit, so evident when he was nearing a punch line or the climax of the tale. He will be missed, but his stories will live with us in our memory and hearts.
In keeping with Gerry’s wishes, he will be cremated with a family celebration of life at a later date. To honor Gerry, his family would appreciate if you would simply smile and say, “hello there!” to a passerby. This signature Gerry greeting can take a “nothing day” and suddenly make it all seem worthwhile.
