Send Sympathy Card
At 12:36 am on Thursday, December 8, 2017, Frank Driedger, with his daughters Judi and Lydia at his side, left this earthly body and flew home to that place prepared for him by his Lord and Saviour.
Frank is survived by Susan, his loving wife of 65 years, six children: Eva (Peter) Driedger, Helen (Don) Stuart, Harry (Ruth) Driedger, Bernie (Liz) Driedger, Judi (John) Reimer and Lydia (Cliff) Froese, 25 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren; two brothers Jack and Isaac and one sister Susan.
He was predeceased by: his parents Henry and Judith Driedger; two sons: Frank and Menno; three sisters: Tina, Judy and Betty and one brother Henry.
Frank was born near Cuauhtemoc, Chihuahua, MX where he grew up and received his education. He was baptized upon the confession of his faith in 1952, at the Santa Clara Mennonite Church. Later that year, on July 6, he married his sweetheart Susan Friesen. Mom remembers when she and Frank were dating, they would often sit on the kitchen steps talking or making music; she on the guitar and Dad playing the harmonica.
In November of 1953, Frank and Susan along with their very young daughter Eva, left Mexico and moved to Gnadenthal, Manitoba where they began their farming career.
In spring of 1965, they moved their family which now numbered six, and their farming industry to MacGregor, MB. Dad loved to tell stories about this very eventful time in their lives. The move happened on May 5th and daughter Judi arrived on May 14th. By the time Susan and the baby came home from the hospital, a major spring storm had hit preventing field work and giving Frank time to install an indoor bathroom at the farm house. Daughter Helen remembers how they would now no longer need to use the dreaded out house at night.
Times on the farm were far from easy, but he always loved working the land and the animals. Strength came from faith in God and church activities. He received much joy from singing in a quartet with three friends who met every Friday night for practice.
An especially sad and trying time for the family was the untimely accidental death of son Frank on October 31, 1974.
Life on the farm came to a close in 1982, when Mom and Dad moved to Steinbach. Here Dad was involved in construction, sales and several entrepreneurial endeavors. Dad achieved his reflexology certification and spent many evening treating clients in their home. He and Mom also became involved in a prison ministry at Stoney Mountain Penitentiary. We did not dare plan a family gathering for the same night as Prison Ministry. He loved to bring hope to the inmates. This ministry continued for 9 1/2 years.
In 2007, Mom and Dad retired in Mitchel, MB, where they enjoyed a slower pace for the next ten years. In 2009, Dad again experienced the sadness of having a son predecease him. Menno died of a heart attack at the age of 49.
Last year at this time we settled Mom and Dad into their condo at Bridgepark Manor. Dad left there by ambulance for Bethesda Regional Health Centre on Thursday, October 19, 2017, where he died peacefully seven weeks later.
Dad will be remembered for his stories, his love of reading, his sense of humor and his hard work to provide for his family. He will be missed by many.
The funeral service for Frank will be held on Thursday, December 14, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach, MB. The burial will follow at the Blumenort EMC Cemetery, Blumenort, MB.
