2017
Obituary Overview
Fr. Carl Kelly OMI
died peacefully on Sunday, November 26,
2017 at Springhurst Residence at the age of 86. He is survived by members of
his religious community, the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate, and his
sister, Sr. Nora Kelly, CSJ (Pembroke), his brother, Bob (Marie) (Edmonton),
his sister Marian (Richard Kennedy) (Bolton, ON), and his sister-in-law,
Shirley. He is survived also by many nieces and nephews and grandnieces and
grandnephews. Fr. Carl is predeceased by his brothers, Joe, Phil OFM Conv, Pat,
Ned and his sister, Ann.
Fr. Carl was born in Farrellton, QC on
March 9, 1931, the son of Eunice (Daly) and Gerald Kelly. He made his first profession
as a Missionary Oblate of Mary Immaculate on September 8, 1952 in Arnprior, and
his final vows on September 8, 1955. He did his studies at Holy Rosary in
Ottawa. Fr. Carl was ordained to the priesthood on June 15, 1958 in Ottawa.
Many will remember Fr. Carl for the years he spent at St. Pat’s High School, as
a teacher, vice principal and principal until 1973. Then as a missionary, Fr.
Carl was sent to Dhaka, Bangladesh, returning to Ottawa following an accident
there in March 1974. Fr. Carl continued his teaching ministry in Richmond Hill
at St. Robert’s High School and then moved back to Ottawa to take up the
position of Director of Chaplaincy at the University of Ottawa, a position he
held until July 1981. Over the last 36 years, Fr. Carl thrived in pastoral
ministry, working in parishes in Hamilton, Thunder Bay, Springhill (NS),
Toronto, Shubenacadie (NS) and finally, Canadian Martyrs Parish. Most recently,
Fr. Carl regularly visited and celebrated mass at Madonna della Risurrezionne
Parish and St. Patrick’s Home in Ottawa. In his eyes the most important part of
his ministry was to be present to the people. Whether in traditional missionary
territory (Dhaka) or downtown Canadian urban settings, he did just that and
enjoyed the myriad of experiences.
Visitation at Canadian Martyrs Church, 100
Main Street (613-232-5347) on Sunday, December 3 from 7-9 p.m. with the Oblate
Vigil Prayer Service at 7 p.m. Funeral Mass on Monday, December 4, 11:30 a.m.,
reception to follow. Interment will take place at St. Theresa’s Cemetery in
Arnprior at 2 p.m.
