Edward “Ted” Conning
1930-2017
Passed away peacefully, with his family by his side, on Thursday
December 14, 2017 in his 88th year. Ted is survived by his loving
wife Enid, with whom he shared 63 devoted years of marriage. A loving
father, Ted will also be forever missed by his children Jill (John)
Bell and their children Naomi (Steve), Brian, Cameron and Ian and
great grandson Teddy, all of Calgary, Janet (Don) Mosher and their
children Dennis, John and Jake of Bright and Bruce (Nancy) Conning and
their children Darby, Sullivan and Seamus of Brantford. Predeceased
by brother Kenneth and sister Ivy, he is survived by his loving sister
Edna (Parry). Ted was also predeceased by his very dear cousin and
pal Gilbert Johnston. Ted will also be missed by his loyal and
long-time friend and brother-in-law Jim Povey. Born in Liverpool,
England on January 25, 1930, Ted spent many of his younger years in
the village of Stowe, Shropshire, where he had been evacuated to
during the dark days of WWII. Ted spoke fondly of his years spent
there and maintained friendships within the community up until his
last days. Ted served in the 3rd Regiment Royal Horse Artillery,
posted to Osnabrück, Germany for 2 years before joining the
Merchant Navy and sailing extensively throughout South America.
Coming to Canada in 1957 and settling in Galt, Ted worked hard to
provide for his family. He was a long-time employee of Babcock &
Wilcox and a retiree of MTD in Kitchener. Ted and Enid were rarely
apart, they made many memorable trips throughout the U.S., Canada and
a few visits back to Britain. Ted was an avid gardener and always
had some project on the go. Family gatherings were often filled with
the sound of “Uncle Ted” playing his harmonica for a sing
along or an opportunity for him to do a bit of his famous story
telling. Ted’s family wish to thank the staff of Hilltop Manor
Nursing Home for the genuine care and compassion they have provided
for the last three years. While cremation has already taken place,
family and friends are asked to join Ted’s family for a
celebration of his life to be held at Corbett Funeral Home, 95 Dundas
St. N., Cambridge, Ontario on Wednesday December 20, 2017 at 2p.m.,
with family receiving guests one hour prior to the service. In memory
of Ted, donations made to the Alzheimer Society of Canada or Hilltop
Manor would be appreciated.
