Douglas Cameron Johnston
October 6, 1920 – September 8, 2017
Doug Johnston died as he wished, in his own bed on Friday September 8, 2017. A community minded person and farmer at heart, he worked the land all his life, from the farm in Grafton to the giant pumpkin patch at Cranberry Lake. He was married to the late Shirley (nee Harnden) for 67 years and raised three children. He is deeply missed by John and Esther, Jean and John and Diane (the late Jim), his grandchildren Becki, Melody, Christina (Stephen), Jeremy (Milla), Cameron and Addie, and famous for his jelly beans which will be missed by the great grandchildren Andrew, Decker and Chloe. Special uncle to Wayne and Anne Hare.
Doug served the Haldimand community his entire life, as an elected official from 1954 to 1967, and on committees of many organizations such as the Federation of Agriculture, Milk Marketing Board, and the Credit Union. He enjoyed serving the community through his insurance business. He earned a lifetime membership to the Grafton Horticultural Society as well as the Alnwick Haldimand Citizen of the Year. In 2012 Doug received the Diamond Jubilee Medal (Queen Elizabeth II) to honour his contributions as a Canadian Citizen. Doug loved his church, St. Andrew’s Grafton, and was an active member of the congregation for most of his adult life. In recent years, he attended church board meetings just to offer his “Heritage Moments” of the community.
