BYRNE, Andrew (Andy) James—
Peacefully at home, surrounded by family on Friday November 3, 2017 after a long and dignified battle with cancer. Andy joins his beloved, predeceased wife Joan for a Sunday morning nine on the fairways of heaven. An athlete, entrepreneur, dreamer and believer, Andy is survived by sons Gary (Carla Goegan), Terry (Judy), sister Oney and brothers James (Shay) and Gerry. Cherished uncle to Tara (Dan); Papa will be sorely missed by Daniel, Sarah, Colin, Joshua and Hannah. Andy is predeceased by his parents, Andrew and Hannah; brothers, Larry and Tommy and sister Stella (Freddie). He will also be remembered fondly by numerous nieces and nephews, and dear friends, both here and abroad. Born July 11, 1933 in Dublin, Andy was proud, lifelong member of both the Canadian and British PGA. Andy’s contributions to the game of golf were far reaching, from being a national champion to an owner and operator of several golf courses in Ontario and beyond. Andy claims to have never worked a day in his life as golf and the relationships fostered along the way were his daily joy. Always quick with a quip or a ready with a story, his Irish charm was never far from the surface and appreciated by all who crossed his path. From Dublin to Toronto, and then to Aberfoyle, Cambridge and Guelph, it was very much a life well played, filled with love and laughter. He will be remembered by many with a smile on their face.
The family will receive friends at the Gilbert MacIntyre & Son Funeral Home, Hart Chapel, 1099 Gordon St., Guelph, on Thursday, November 9, 2017 from 2:00-4:00 p.m. and 7:00-9:00 p.m. A Family Vigil will take place Thursday at 8:30 p.m. Mass will be held at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 409 Paisley Rd, Guelph, on Friday, November 10th, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. followed by an internment at Marymount Catholic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, Andy’s family would be grateful for memorial donations to the Canadian MPS Society (www.mpssociety.ca). Cards are available at the funeral home at (519)821-5077.
