Philadelphia Aikins passed away peacefully on October 24, 2017 following a short illness. She was born in Birmingham, England on August 22, 1921 to James and Sarah Fuell. Phil met the love of her life, Frank Stacey Aikins, while he was stationed in England. They were married on September 18, 1943. As a war bride Phil traveled from South Hampton on the Queen Mary arriving in Halifax, with their daughter, Sandra, on July 23, 1946. She then proceeded to travel by rail to Calgary to enjoy her new home country and be reunited with her husband. In 1948 the family moved to their forever home of Nelson, BC where Phil became very active in the First Baptist Church.
She was predeceased by her parents James and Sarah Fuell, husband Frank Aikins in 1976, son David Aikins in 2015, grand-daughters Lisa Aikins in 1983 and Kerry Couston in 2011, as well as siblings James, Kenneth, George, Mary, Ellen, and Lily.
Phil is survived by her daughters Sandra (Gordon) Jeffs and Christine (Greg) Couston, daughter-in-law Katy Martel, grandchildren Colleen (Mark) Stringer, Lorraine (Skip Parker) Jeffs, Reanne (Tony) Vercillo, Stacey (Amanda Brown) Jeffs, Heather (Sam Howe) Couston, Robert (Samantha) Couston, David, Shawn and Cheryl Aikins, 19 great-grandchildren, 3 great great-grandchildren, adopted “grand-daughters” CIC Students Hiroe and Yukako, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family.
Phil’s family extends a heartfelt thank you to Pastor John Thwaites, Maureen, Wendy, Janet, Colleen, home support workers, Dr. Jeanette Boyd, Dr. Brandon Tuvel, Dr. Phillip Malpass, and the awesome nurses of the third floor at the Kootenay Lake Hospital for making her last days so comfortable and peaceful.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, November 18, 2017 at 11:00 am at the First Baptist Church, 611 Fifth St, with Pastor John Thwaites officiating. As an expression of sympathy, donations may be made in Phil’s honour to the Nelson & District Hospice Society or the Kootenay Lake Hospital Foundation. Phil will be especially missed for her wonderful stories, sense of humor and joyful pride in all of her grandchildren. You are invited to leave a personal message of condolence.
