William Lavigne Obituary
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of William James “Jim” Lavigne, who left us peacefully on February 15, 2025, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Saint John, New Brunswick. Born on December 19, 1941, in Saint John, to the late William James and Hazel Mary (Higgs) Lavigne, Jim lived a life of dedication, craftsmanship, and selfless service to his family and community.
Jim was predeceased by his beloved wife, Donna Marie Lavigne (Foote), with whom he shared a loving marriage since 1981. He was a devoted father to Lori (Angelo), Jeffrey (Kerry), Jason (Tara), Ryan (Krystal), and Christopher (Robyn). A proud grandfather, he cherished his grandchildren Olivia & Jordan, Craig, Jesse & Mikayla, Zachary, Jackson & Tenley, Harper & Hayden, as well as his great-grandchild Lief. He is also survived by his siblings Louise, Dorothy, Richard, Brian, and Katherine, and was predeceased by his brother, John.
Jim’s work ethic and passion were evident throughout his career. He began as a welder at the Drydock in Saint John before following his true calling in carpentry, running his own business crafting cabinets and woodworking projects for many years. Later, he shared his skills by teaching woodworking at the Saint John Regional Correctional Centre, where he guided and inspired many.
A dedicated volunteer, Jim devoted countless hours to St. Joseph’s/Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish, always willing to lend a hand. Whether baking for organizations like Avenue B, making furniture or repairs at the St. Joseph’s Church and H.O.P.E. Centre, calling Bingo, assisting with church dinners, or working with the Knights of Columbus, Jim was always among the first to step forward. He was also instrumental in the development of the Simonds Volunteer Fire & Ambulance Department where he served in leadership roles for many years. Because of this remarkable commitment to community service, he was made a Serving Brother in the Order of St. John by the Canadian Governor General in 1982.
Jim’s hands were rarely still, whether he was building something beautiful, or baking treats his family and friends loved. His “Grampy cookies”were second-to-none, and his date squares were legendary. He lived a simple yet meaningful life, focused on his family, hard work, and giving back to others. When asked how he was doing in his later years, his signature response was always, “Pretty good for an old guy.”
Visitation will be held at Fundy Funeral Home on Tuesday, February 25, from 2:00–4:00 PM and 6:00–8:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church (4347 Loch Lomond Road) on Wednesday, February 26, at noon. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jim’s honour to the H.O.P.E. Centre.
The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to Dobbelsteyn’s Special Care Home and to the many friends who showed Dad kindness and support over the past 16 months. We also want to thank the GEM Unit at St. Joseph’s Hospital for their exceptional care and compassion.
Jim will be deeply missed but forever remembered for his unwavering kindness, generosity, and love for those around him.
