It’s with profound sadness we announce the passing of Wilbert George Pitfield (Aajijaak), peacefully surrounded by his loving family on March 7, 2025. George was predeceased by his wife Mary (Maggie) Pitfield (2020) having spent 58 loving years together. Devoted father of David Pitfield (Sue) and Holly Pitfield (Pierre). Cherished Papa to Wayd Pitfield (Cait), Alex Pitfield (Katie), Nicolas (Ashley), and Rachel-Lynn DiRezze (John). Great-Papa to Jordan and Hannah Pitfield. Uncle to Keely Kemp (Eric), Andrea Page (Chris) and great uncle to Ginger and Lila Page. Predeceased by his parents Captain Wilbert Charles and Irene Pitfield, father and mother in-law Ross and Helen Butler, brother and sister in-law Lloyd and Lorna Kemp.
George was an amazing man who touched many lives with his compassion, leadership, varied qualities and ethics he endured during his life. He found humour in every day life, bringing much laughter and joy to those around him. George was a proud member of Aamjiwnaang First Nation keeper of the language and facilitated his knowledge with mentoring and being the lay minister of the Aamjiwnaang United Church for numerous years. Early in his life, he played in the band The Blue Echos as a drummer, performing at many places in the Sarnia area including The Vendome and Kenwick on the Lake also extending their music into Port Huron. He carried his love of music throughout his life, spending his evenings playing his Wurlitzer organ. He was a member of The Masons Lodge and The Scottish Right. One of his biggest thrills was being a Shriner travelling to different towns and driving his little cars in parades.
Throughout his career, George worked as a police officer and an ambulance attendant for St. Johns. He was a pipe fitter for Exxon, Imperial Oil which he truly enjoyed up until his retirement. After his retirement, he became the President of the Geneology Society, always happy to share history of his family.
George had the pleasure of being the first resident at Ganigiiwe “Going Home” Hospice-Like Space on Aamjiwnaang First Nation. The exceptional care and compassion that George and his family received from the staff and volunteers will be cherished forever. Chi Miigwech to all of you! Also, an extended thank you to Bayshore and all staff at Bluewater Health CCCOG Unit.
Cremation has taken place. Family and friends will be received at Smith Funeral Home, 1576 London Line, Sarnia on Friday, March 14, 2025 from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. with a memorial service to follow at 12:00 p.m. Please come with your favourite story of George to share.
Sympathy may be expressed through donations to Ganigiiwe “Going Home” Hospice-Like Space on Aamjiwnaang First Nation (cheques only at the funeral home please). Arrangements entrusted to Smith Funeral Home, 1576 London Line, Sarnia.
