With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Welby Mondon Freake, age 90, on February 15th, 2025, at Notre Dame Bay Memorial Health Centre, Twillingate. Husband of Laura (nee Brown) for 65 years. Father to Charmaine (Gary), Troy, Darren (Kerry). Pop to Amanda (Paul), Adam (Rochelle) and step pop to Sydney (Mike). Great grandfather to Sarah, Nevaeh, Damian, Rhianna and Garrett. Great great grandfather to Scarlett. He was predeceased by parents John and Maude Freake, parents-in-law George and Hilda Brown. Brother Fred, sister Stella, Gwen, Audrey and brother-in-law Eric Simms. Sister-in-law Mary and Fern. Brother-in-law Lorne. A loving husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather, brother, brother-in-law, uncle, cousin and friend.
Welby was very loving, selfless and always put others needs above his own. Known for his patience and kind spirit. Family was his pride and joy, and their needs came first. Grandchildren and great grandchildren were his joy. He loved spending time playing and laughing with them. He cherished every moment with fun, laughter and joy.
Welby was born and raised in Joe Batt’s Arm, Fogo Island where he married his childhood sweetheart, and their relationship spanned 70 years. They celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary in 2024. They moved to Twillingate on the 24th of May 1960 where they raised their family.
He had a very successful career in which he was a wonderful mentor to those who worked with and under him. His intelligence and resourcefulness was unparalleled. He was always willing to tackle any challenge.
In his early years he enjoyed cutting firewood and having a good old-fashioned cup of tea. He loved a day trouting with family and friends. Tinkering with things to fix and build. He also adored and loved his family cats (Pokey, Skipper, Sam, Scamp, and his adopted cats Fred, Clifford and Chandler).
His memory will forever be cherished by his family who are comforted knowing that his legacy of love, kindness and compassion will live on in all who knew him. He will be deeply missed but lovingly remembered by his family and friends.
He was Chief Operator of the Twillingate Fire Department which he volunteered for 29 years. He extremely enjoyed participating and working with the other members of the fire department.
