It is with a profound sense of loss and great sadness we announce the peaceful passing of Wayne. Born in Sarnia and raised in Corunna, Wayne passed away after a five-year struggle with vascular dementia in his 73rd year, the same illness that took his father. Predeceased by his beloved parents, Donald and Shirley Beaton, brother Rob Beaton and nephew Troy Kraus.
Wayne will be remembered by his immediate family in Sarnia, sister Heather Virostek, nephew Tyler Virostek (Erin), nephew Sean and niece Molly; in Alberta by his sister Sandra Kraus (Les), nephew Jeremy Kraus, and his good friend Jim Keys in Sarnia.
In his professional career, Wayne held many important positions. In Sarnia, he worked for the city coordinating cultural and entertainment events. At the request of Ellen Mackinnon, former MPP for Lambton, Wayne moved to Toronto in 1990 to work as her executive assistant at her Queen’s Park office. Wayne was so well respected that after working for an NDP member, Wayne was then asked to work for Marcel Beaubien, MPP for Sarnia-Lambton, a Conservative member, as his executive assistant at Queen’s Park. Later, working for the Industrial Accident Prevention Association, Wayne was flown to New York to accept a coveted communication award. Wayne finished his illustrious career with the Ontario Ministry of Tourism as a manager in the communications department.
At Queen’s Park, Wayne met Martha MacLachlan who became his significant other for all family and fun events. He also remained close to his Toronto posse, Joseph Hagger, Gilles Bouffard, Rick Leone, Eva Smerdon, Dot Boyle and a myriad of other Toronto friends. Wayne forged many new friendships in Puerto Vallarta thanks to Murray Gaudreau who introduced Wayne to winter holidays in Mexico and became like a wise younger brother to Wayne.
It should be remembered that Wayne was a gifted musician and played piano in bar bands in his younger years. At his Toronto condo home which he loved, he served as president of the condominium board for one term and volunteered on the social committee. He was a gentle man, a kind man and a good-natured man. Wayne will be missed by many.
A funeral service will be held at Smith Funeral Home, 1576 London Line, Sarnia, on Monday, February 24, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. with family and friends being received one hour prior from 10:00-11:00 a.m.
