It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Walter (Wally) on March 2, 2025. Loving and devoted husband to Cheryl. Father to Tim Afanasiew and Tamara Tetreault (Alain). Grandpa to Alexander. Brother to Vic (Irene), uncle to Michael. Son of the late Boris and Alexandra Afanasiew. Beloved son-in-law to the late Harold and Phyllis Hampton, brother-in-law to the late Stevie Hampton, uncle to Daniel (Sarah) Hampton, and Matthew (Sarah) Hampton, and great uncle of Thomas and Emily. Dear Cousin to Tamara Racette (Gaetin). Wally had a long and varied career beginning in Montreal with a position in the banking industry. He then moved on to become a marketing manager at CP rail where he met his love and future wife, Cheryl. They moved together to Toronto where Wally took on another position at CP rail. A short stint with General Chemical brought the family to the Windsor area. He then found himself in Moscow for 5 years while Cheryl kept the home fires burning. While in Moscow Wally reconnected with family while enjoying his passion for opera and ballet. Returning from Russia Wally and Cheryl both went back to school to learn about lawn care and landscaping. Upon graduation the couple ran a franchise before starting their own lawn care, maintenance and landscaping company. Wally, always restless, went back to school again to learn about sprinkler system allowing him to start another company, Aqua Turf. Wally finally retired to the farm where he enjoyed gardening (and having a yearly contest with Cheryl over who made the best pickles), shooting pool or just sitting on the back porch with friends, and his weekly golf games and trips with the boys. In later years he loved just traveling and cruising with Cheryl. Visitation will be held on Thursday March 6, 2025 from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. at Families First Amherstburg, 585 Sandwich St. S., 519-969-5841.
