Wallace Butler Obituary
Wallace Campbell Butler was born in Lethbridge on February 28, 1932, the fourth of six children. His parents were tenant farmers in the Picture Butte area. Wally, or as he was known in the family, Laddie, lived there until his early teens, when the family moved to Fernie.
Upon completing high school Wally joined the Imperial Bank of Canada. His banking career took him from Fernie to Nelson, then to Invermere. Transferred to Rocky Mountain House in 1955, he met his future wife Joyce and they were married there two years later.
Following a short residency in Wetaskiwin, the bank transferred Wally to Calgary, where their first son Paul was born in 1962. The following year, another move with the bank took them to Lethbridge and in 1964, their second son Todd was joyfully welcomed into the family. They returned to Calgary in 1966 and in what would become Wally’s final transfer with the bank, they relocated to Jasper in 1968.
The vagabond life came to an end in1972 as Wally resigned from the CIBC and the family made Jasper their forever home.
Wally worked his way through various business ventures in Jasper before settling into the motel business in 1985. Pursuing a progressive retirement plan which became complete only in 2015 upon the sale of Bear Hill Lodge, Wally continued to enjoy his many recreational pursuits and passions including hiking, skiing, golf, curling, woodworking and travel.
Following the 2024 fire, Wally and Joyce generously moved to Alpine Summit Seniors Lodge so Paul and Kaya could move into their beautiful home. The family was together for Wally’s last Christmas.
As Wally’s health declined, family and friends spent long, loving hours at his side with stories, laughter and honest talk about his future. He died February 19, 2025, surrounded by his family.
Missing him more than we can say are Joyce, his loving wife of 67 years, son Todd, son Paul, daughter-in-law Kaya, grandson Adrian, youngest sister Judy and many nieces and nephews.
The family requests that any donations in memory of Wally be directed to the Jasper Yellowhead Historical Society.
