82 Years
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Violet Elizabeth Atwell (née Schapansky), a devoted wife, loving mother, cherished nana, sister, aunt, and dear friend to many. Vi passed away peacefully in the early morning of March 6, with her daughters by her side. Vi bravely fought a 2 year battle with cancer, with faith, grace and hope. She leaves to mourn her loving husband of 13 years, Harold, who did not leave her side throughout their marriage and especially in the last days of her life. She will also be lovingly remembered by her daughters Cindy (Steve) and Deedee (Bob), grandsons Brandon (Avery) and Billy (Taryn), sisters Eleanor (Orville), Darlene (Bernd), and Iona, step children, Trevor (Kallayanee), their daughter Tamarine, Kim, Heather (Ryan) and their kids Marie & Arnold as well as nieces Kerri, Amy, Kelly, Darci, Deb, Roxy and nephews Marty and Matthew and all of their families.
Vi was predeceased by her first husband, Len Atwell (married 1964 until his death in 2003), her parents, Martin and Elizabeth Schapansky, and her sisters, Joan and Verna. Though she has left this world, she has also left an enduring legacy of kindness, generosity, and unconditional love that will remain in the hearts of all who knew her.
Vi was born and raised in Rosthern, Saskatchewan. She attended elementary school in Rosthern and later Rosthern Jr College. She later graduated from Saskatoon Business College in 1960 and worked in various law offices before finding her dream job at CBC TV, where she built a fulfilling career from 1969 until her retirement in 1996. In retirement, she pursued her passion for folk art painting and visiting with friends and family! She was also an avid knitter, delighting in making slippers and washcloths for anyone who would take them. Among Vi’s greatest joys was her grandsons Brandon and Billy. She treasured her time with them and later with their partners as well. Vi was so proud of the men they had become and took every opportunity to brag about them to all who would listen! She also had a passion for travelling, especially cruising. Just four short months ago, Vi, Harold, and Deedee embarked on one final adventure to Central America and through the Panama Canal, a bucket list trip fulfilled! She also cherished her time spent at the family cabin at Anglin Lake, where many wonderful memories were made since 1979!
Vi’s warmth, laughter, and love will be deeply missed by all whose lives she touched.

The family would like to thank all of the family who supported her around the clock in the last weeks of Vi’s life. She would have been so happy knowing how the sisters, nieces and nephews, brothers-in-law and friends all came together at Glengarda to be there for her every need. There was not one minute that Vi was alone during her 2 week stay at Glengarda. The family would especially like to thank the staff at the Hospice at Glengarda for all of their tremendous support over the last two weeks of Vi’s life. In lieu of flowers, we are encouraging the community to donate to St. Paul’s Hospital Foundation in support of the Hospice at Glengarda.
