It is with deep sorrow and much love that we mourn the passing of Vincent John McCloskey on Saturday January 18, four days after his 86th birthday. He will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed by his wife of 60 years, Constance; daughter, Erin; son, Travis; and daughter-in-law Anastasia; grandchildren, Zack, Enya, and Celeste; siblings, Michael, May, and Desmond; sisters-in-law, Luetta and Judy; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He is predeceased by parents, Francis Joseph and Matilda; siblings, Dennis, Francis Josephine, Daniel, and Gerald.
The youngest child of eight, Vince was born in Glasgow Scotland at the onset of WWII and had many tales to tell of his childhood. He immigrated to Canada in 1956 after learning his trade as a watchmaker. He and his brothers sailed across the Atlantic with the blessing of their mother to forge their way in the jewelry business. Vince was a master watchmaker, working for The Hudson’s Bay Company and top jewelers in Edmonton. He fixed countless timepieces for friends and family throughout his life. His home was always ticking!
When this handsome young man working the watchmaker’s bench at The Bay caught Connie’s eye, it wasn’t long until they were married. And soon, as if a dream, this kid from the Gorbals found himself building a home on 40 acres of Alberta prairie and raising a family – and a menagerie of animals, from horses to pigeons and his beloved border collie Shamu. He loved the American folk music scene and was an annual attendee of the Edmonton Folk Music Festival from its inaugural year. Family holidays were to “the island,” where he had hoped to live some day. Ever a hard worker, he took on a second career with the Government of Alberta in the Correctional Service as a Corrections Officer, from which he retired in 2012 after 27 years of service. But he continued “tinkering” in his workshop and his garage, the two places where he
could most often be found.
Vince was a person who was liked by all and enjoyed a life rich with history and experience; it is impossible to sum up such a person in a few paragraphs. A celebration of life will be held at 1:00 pm, on Saturday February 22, 2025, at the Edmonton Scottish Society Hall, 3105-101 Street SW, Edmonton.
The family wish to thank the staff at Bayshore homecare and the Gene Zwozdesky Centre for their compassionate care. Donations to Parkinson Canada may be made in Vince’s name.
Arrangements entrusted to Connelly-McKinley Edmonton South.
