Obituary of Vina Agnes Richard
1935-2025
Vina Agnes (Berthier) Richard, 89, of Halifax, passed away peacefully at the QE2 hospital in Halifax on March 7, 2025 surrounded by her loving family.
Born in L’Ardoise Cape Breton, Aunt Vina was the daughter of the late Selena (Mombourquette) Berthier and the Late Frank Berthier. In 1939, the family made their way to Halifax where they lived on Lower Water Street for a short time before later returning to the L’Ardoise that they all loved.
On November 28th, 1964 Vina met Jerome; the love of her life. They had a good but humble life filled with love and happiness. Sadly, Aunt Vina and Jerome never had children of their own so she had a special bond with many of her nieces and nephews.
We couldn’t have asked for a more kind, funny, loving, quick-witted, amazing woman to be part of our lives.
Aunt Vina loved bingo! She was happiest with a bingo dabber in hand. TV Bingo, bingo at Tommy’s, or bingo at the Forum; it didn’t matter to her. As long as she was doing what she loved!
She loved playing break opens, always hoping that she could win big so she could give it all away. With every visit, she would ask, “Any tickets for me today?”. Of course, we had tickets.
Vina loved watching game shows, Three’s Company, The Waltons, old movies, and whatever would make her laugh. She loved music; and cherished her old collection of country music. Charlie Pride, Randy Travis, her favourite song Long Black Train, and whatever else would make her tap her hands and feet. But most of all she loved talking on the phone all hours of the day and night.
We will all miss her calls and the messages saying, “Where are you now?”
But she will be especially missed by her younger sister and best friend Lena. I could hear them chatting several times a day, every day.
Aunt Vina was predeceased by her husband, Jerome Richard of Charlos Cove Guysborough County; brothers William, Alfred, Charlie, Clifford, and Roy; sisters, baby Irene (in infancy), Irene, and Bertha.
Left to mourn is her sister and the youngest surviving member of the immediate Berthier family, Lena Gerrior of Halifax. Aunt Vina had a special bond with her nieces Brenda Gerrior, Tina Burkey, and nephew Bryan Gerrior all of Halifax. Many other nieces, nephews, and extended family are left to mourn her loss.
Arrangements and cremation have taken place under the care of J. Albert Walker Funeral Home. Visitation will held on March 22, 2025, at 1:00 PM followed by a funeral mass begining at 2:00 PM at J. Albert Walker Funeral Home, 149 Herring Cove Road, Halifax, Nova Scotia. Burial will take place at a later date in Charlos Cove where she will be laid to rest with her late husband Jerome.
Special thanks to 8.2 palliative care at the QE2. Thank you for making her last days comfortable. A special thank you to my brother Bryan and my cousin Tina for holding a bedside vigil for Aunt Vina and to my amazing mother Lena for always being Aunt Vina’s constant provider, confidant, and best friend.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Heart Foundation, Canadian Cancer Society, or a charity of your choice.
Aunt Vina, you will forever be in our hearts. Thank you for all the wonderful memories and your unwavering love. We will love and remember you always.
