Verdella Elaine (Metcalf) Stere, formerly of Puslinch Township, passed away at Caressant Care, Harriston, on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, in her 94th year.
Mother of Russell Stere of Breslau, and stepmother of Dale Stere of Newfoundland. Grandmother of Tyler and Austin.
Sister of Lydia Maitland of New Hamburg, Evelyn Klages of Harriston, Ken & Sharon Metcalf of Kitchener, and loved and remembered also by her nieces and nephews.
Verdella was predeceased by her parents David & A.R. Beryl Metcalf, her son Trevor Stere (2020), brothers-in-law Malcolm Maitland and Carman Klages, and by her former spouse Verle Stere.
Verdella was born in Greenoch Township on May 18, 1932. From humble beginnings, she was a woman ahead of her time—intelligent, determined, and dedicated to learning. She taught school overseas, and returned to school later in life to earn her bachelor’s degree. She believed that teaching children to read was one of the greatest gifts you could give, opening doors to opportunity. She had students send her notes later in their lives, thanking her for encouraging them.
Her family and friends admired her intellect and many accomplishments, including obtaining her pilot’s license in 1959. She was a gifted crocheter and knitter. Verdella will be remembered for her love of travel, and deep and thoughtful conversations on topics like politics and the arts. She is deeply admired and will be missed.
Visitation will be held at the Hardy-Lee Funeral Home, Harriston, on Saturday, May 31, 2025 from 10:30 until 12:00 p.m., with interment to follow in Purdy’s Cemetery, Greenock Township.
Memorial donations to Caressant Care Residents’ Council, or Purdy’s Cemetery would be appreciated.
