Vera’s Obituary
Passed away peacefully on August 14, 2025, at the age of 92 years, surrounded by her family. Predeceased by her husband of 71 years, James D. Morton. Dear mother of Linda (Paul), Patti, Susan (Steven) and James. Cherished grandma of Fran, Devin, Brin, Kahlan and great grandma of Samantha, Justin, Ruby and Riot. She will be missed by the extended Morton, Martin and McKnight families, as well as her dear, long-time friend Ruth Fixter and friends from Ayr, Glen Morris, Paris and surrounding areas. Her presence will be missed amongst Telfer Place staff and residents.
Survived by sister Marylynne Rafka (Martin) and brother Frank Martin. Predeceased by parents Mary (Wright) and Frank Martin, and siblings Monica Thompson (Wright), Jeanne Neil (Martin), Allan Martin, Ralph Martin, Sylvia Haenni (Martin), Joyce Martin, Kathleen Clemens (Martin) and Gail Emily Martin.
Vera and Jim lived on a farm on West River Road, along the Grand River, for 56 years. Their acreage was part of the Spottiswood Lakes watershed and included a prominent example of Carolinian forest. Vera grew beautiful flower beds and tended huge garden plots for freezing and canning. She was an avid Blue Jays fan, and the portable radio was always nearby as she worked. She enjoyed baking for family and guests, made massive meals for farm hands, drove kids to events and sports, hosted many family reunions, and kept a very tidy home. She also worked outside of the home for many years – first at the catalog office at Eaton’s and then at Sears, in Cambridge. In her later years she and Jim moved to Morningside Retirement Community in New Hamburg, before finally settling into Telfer Place in Paris for the past 12 years. She thrived there and enjoyed knitting, cards, puzzles and kibbitzing with everyone. She will be missed by family and friends!
The family extends their heartfelt thanks to the staff at Brantford General for their compassion and care, and to the staff and residents at Telfer Place for their support and friendship.
Funeral arrangements entrusted to the Dwayne D. Budgell Funeral Home. Per Vera’s expressed wishes, a Private Family Graveside Service will be held. In Vera’s memory, donations either to the Glen Morris United Church (eTransfer to gmucdonation@gmail.com), Glen Morris Cemetery Board, or Brant Community Healthcare System Foundation would be appreciated by her family.
