Obituary of Vance Frederick Kennedy
KENNEDY, Vance “Sonny” Frederick- Age 82 of Upper Tantallon.
It is with heavy hearts that we announce that Vance “Sonny” Frederick Kennedy, of Upper Tantallon, passed away peacefully, at his home, with family by his side, on February 6, 2025. Born on July 25, 1942, in Kingston, Nova Scotia, he was raised in South Brookfield and later moved to the community of Upper Tantallon, where he resided until his passing.
Sonny ( as he was known by his friends and family) started his career as a machinist at the Anil Hardboard plant in East River. He then went on to work for Nautel in Seabright before finishing his career with IMP and retiring in 2007. He met the love of his life, Judith Lilian Mason, in 1962. They were married on July 23, 1966, started a family, and had two boys, Craig and Brian.
Sonny was very active in his community and the church in the Parish of French Village. He coached his boys’ baseball teams and played hockey and baseball himself. He was also an active bowler up until his passing. Sonny liked to barbecue, visit with friends and family, and putter in his garage to keep busy. He enjoyed cutting and splitting firewood and was always on top of making sure he had the year’s supply ahead.
Sonny leaves behind his loving wife Judy; sons, Craig and Brian (Debbie); four grandchildren, Parker, Adriane, Marcus, and Rachel; brother, Paul (Sheila); and sister, Linda. Sonny was predeceased by his brother in law, Breckon.
Sonny was a man of rare kindness and integrity. He was genuine, honest, and one of the sweetest individuals you could ever meet. Those who knew him will never forget his unwavering positivity and warmth. He will be missed for his generosity, willingness to help others, and his great sense of humor.
We would like to extend our deepest gratitude to the Palliative Care Team, VON Nurses, and all those who kept Sonny comfortable in his last days. A very special thank you to Nurse Practitioner Vicki Guy.
Arrangements and cremation have been entrusted by J. Albert Walker Funeral Home, 149 Herring Cove Road, Halifax. In keeping with Sonny’s wishes, there will be no visitation. A Celebration of Life will take place at St. George’s Anglican Church on Thursday, February 13th, at 2 p.m. with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. George’s Anglican Church and the Cancer Association.
