Valerie Arlene Matheson
July 26, 1957 – January 13, 2025
It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our dearly loved mother Valerie Arlene Matheson (nee Portman). In the early hours of the morning, following repeated cardiac arrests, she passed with her children at her side at the Rosthern Hospital. Born in Merritt, BC, she was predeceased by her parents Allan and Ruth Portman (nee Graham), husband Donald Matheson, and sisters Darlene and Colleen. She is survived by her children Justin and Steven, sisters Lynn and Rose Ann, nieces Marcie, Lindsay, Nikki and Jade, nephews Allan, Matt and Devin, sister in law Sharon Matheson, step daughters Suzanne and Estelle Matheson, and numerous other family and friends. Mom was the strongest person we’ve ever known. Her battles started at birth. Those battles, and the nurses and doctors who helped her along her recovery, also helped lay out her path in life. In her teens she was a candy striper, volunteering to help nurses and hospital staff however she could. By 20 she was a licensed practical nurse and furthered her nursing education through the 80’s. After moving to Saskatchewan in 82, she suffered a broken neck in July of 1988 that led to another difficult battle. Spared from paralysis after spinal surgeries and following months of recovery, she graduated and got her Diploma in Nursing at the Kelsey Institute less than a year later. She sat on the Gabriel Springs Health Board and became president of her local SUN. She would go on dedicating her life to helping others, nursing in Wakaw and the Prince Albert area until a large stroke in 2008 left her very near to leaving us. She pulled through with a miraculous recovery, a recovery that took many years. Her bravery, courage, and kindness in life will never be forgotten as she has affected and influenced so many people. She loved horses, great danes, Harley-Davidsons, the Rolling Stones, hummingbirds, antiques, the Train station we made into our home and so much more. Most of all, she loved her family and friends. She loved to travel and much of her free time was dedicated to heading out with loved ones and travelling to see those she loved. She was active in local communities volunteering for various organizations, even taking on the title of Mayor in her home of Alvena. She was the most wonderful Mother we could ever hope for. A shining light that kept the darkness at bay, brought us together, and held us together. We’ve often felt the Lord has called to Mom several times, but she wouldn’t go when there was still so much she could do here for others. She was an angel on this earth. We will miss her greatly, but we take comfort in knowing that she is in her rightful place in Heaven, and she may finally have her rest. A celebration of her life will be held at 2:00 on January 18, 2025 at the Alvena Community Center in Alvena, SK. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Valerie may be made to Telemiracle.
