Obituary of Thomas George Cairney
Thomas “George” Cairney
(1945-2025)
It is with great sadness we say goodbye to Thomas “George” Cairney. George passed away peacefully on Friday March 7th at Markham Stouffville Hospital with loved ones by his side at the age of 79. He will be missed dearly and lovingly remembered by his sons, Ryan Cairney (Jenny), Jason Cairney (Carrie), and younger brother Bill Cairney (Kathy). He was the beloved son of the late Elizabeth & Thomas Cairney. Cherished Grampa to Granddaughters Chanel, Quinn, Eli, Lexi, Anna, and Beth, whom he always supported watching countless dance performances and many softball games, while also making holiday visits out to BC. George was a well-respected player in the Unionville Slo Pitch League (USPL) for almost 40 years, finishing off pitching in the Masters Division until the age of 77. George was a devoted Senior Project Manager at MAC Cosmetics for almost 30 years, prior to which he was self-employed and worked for Purolator Courier.
George grew up on Kingston Rd in Toronto, attending Norway Public School and Malvern High School, continuing on to study Business at Centennial College, all the while being actively involved in basketball, baseball and Scouts. More recently, during the Summer months, you could find George driving around in his Jag top down or hanging out on the Baseball diamond, even when we wasn’t playing. In the Winter season, George and Ryan shared a passion for cheering on the Toronto Maple Leafs, either down at the game or at home on the couch. George had a strong sweet tooth – he never said no to a savory dessert, especially butter tarts and ice cream.
A special thank you is extended to the staff at Markham Stouffville Hospital who joked, took great care, and kept him comfortable during his final weeks. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in George’s memory to Jumpstart, Scouts Canada or Canadian Cancer Society.
Visitation will occur on Friday March 14th at 1pm, immediately followed by a Celebration of Life at 2pm at Dixon-Garland Funeral Home (166 Main Street North, Markham). All are welcome.
