It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, Tom Gass, who died peacefully at home with loved ones by his side on January 25, 2025.
Predeceased by his daughter Heather Kramer and his grandson Peter Kramer, he leaves behind a legacy of love and devotion, cherished by his wife of 72 years Joan (nee Mawhinney), his daughter Wendy McLaughlin, and his son Michael (Patti). Adored as “Grandpa Tom” by Kristen Kramer, Ryan McLaughlin (Sam), Ian McLaughlin (Corinne), Joanie Stoate (George), Jeffrey Gass (Kim) and Julie Crew (Jean Marc), and 11 great-grandchildren who brought him immense joy.
Tom was born on March 4, 1931, in Toronto to Beryl and Tom Gass and grew up under the watchful eyes of his two half brothers Peter and John McCrodan. He attended St. Andrews College and later embarked on a 13 year career in the army during which he and Joan lived in Germany, London, Ontario, Rivers, Manitoba and Barrie, Ontario. Tom served for a year as a peacekeeper in Gaza in 1960 before retiring as a Captain in 1965. The family then moved to Toronto where he began his distinguished career with Bongard Leslie, retiring in 1996 from BMO Nesbitt Burns.
Tom treasured long summers cottaging in Muskoka with his family, always taking advantage of the special days when the wind picked up and he could show off his skippering skills to a family crew of all ages and abilities, instilling in his grandchildren a love of sport. He was an avid golfer and skier and enjoyed countless hours at Muskoka Lakes Golf and Country Club and Caledon Ski Club. He and Joan enjoyed 25 winters at their much loved home in Naples, Florida where he continued his love of sailing establishing the weekly club RC sailing regattas. They travelled the world on many memorable trips with family and friends.
Tom will be remembered as the best dressed man in the room, a fine gentleman, a man of tradition and a proud Canadian. He had an infectious smile with brilliant dimples, a clever sense of humour, and a remarkable ability to forge friendships where ever he went. He lived a long fulfilling life surrounded by the love of his family, dear friends and neighbours.
A celebration of Tom’s life will be held on April 25, 2025, from 4-6 pm at Rosedale Golf Club.

  1. Our heartfelt condolences to the Gass family. I had the good fortune of curling with Tom at the Granite Club in the early 1980’s with my Dad ( Fred De Guerre). Tom was a great team player and a heck of a curler and sportsman. He always had a smile on his face regardless whether we were winning or losing a match. Frankly my favourite part of curling was post game celebrations. Tom had the best stories and funniest jokes. He was a kind, considerate, fun loving gentleman who will be sorely missed.
