Obituary of The Rev. Canon William Neville Cheeseman
The Reverend Canon William Neville Cheeseman died on Saturday, February 8, 2025, at Pine Grove Nursing Home in Fredericton, NB. Neville was born January 25, 1939, in Three Rivers, Quebec, to the late Edna (Burton) and William Cheeseman.
Neville went to the SSJE (Society of Saint John the Evangelist), a Monastic community in Bracebridge, Ontario, and in 1959 was professed. Following graduation from the University of Windsor, with a Bachelor of Social Work degree, in 1972, he worked for the John Howard Society, Niagara Falls, where he became Director. He was released from his SSJE vows in 1981 and worked in Child Protection with the Kawartha Haliburton Children’s Aid in Peterborough.
In 1983 Neville met with Archbishop Nutter, Diocese of Fredericton, and proceeded to earn a Master of Divinity Degree at the Atlantic School of Theology, Halifax. He was ordained Deacon in 1986 and Priest in 1987, serving a Curacy at Christ Church Cathedral, Fredericton, NB. During his time as Chaplain at UNB (1989-1997) he met and married Judi Keay in 1991. Neville became Rector of the Parish of Fredericton Junction, NB, in 1997 and retired in 2004.
Neville was appointed an Honourary Canon of Christ Church Cathedral in 2007 and Honourary Assistant at St. Margaret’s Church in Fredericton, NB, from 2019-2023. Bishop Edwards, Diocese of Fredericton, appointed Neville as Chaplain at Pine Grove in 2023. Neville, proud of his British heritage (his father a Yorkshireman and his mother from Leicestershire) was never afraid to stand up for what he believed, nor shy about standing up for others. “Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak; courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen” – Winston Churchill’s quote describes very well the man we knew as Neville or Brother Neville.
Neville is survived by his wife, Judi; stepchildren, Traci (John), Charles (Melissa) and Sheri (Fred) together with step-grandchildren, Sean and Reagan, as well as his sister, June. He was predeceased by his parents, baby sister, Doreen, and brother, Brian.
The family wishes to extend their deepest gratitude to the incredible Pine Grove Staff for their compassionate care and support during Neville’s residency.
There will be no visitation. A celebration of Neville’s life will be held at Christ Church (Parish Church) on Friday, February 14, 2025 at 2:00 pm officiated by The Rev. Canon Wandlyn Snelgrove. In lieu of flowers, donations in Neville’s memory may be made to the Pine Grove Foundation.
