Ted ‘Teddy’ Pachkowski Obituary
On December 28, 2024, at 85 years of age, Ted Pachkowski of the Boyan, MB district passed away at home with his family by his side. Ted was the first of four children, born in the Rhodes district on March 30, 1939 to Fred and Anne (nee Hneny) Pachkowski. Ted attended school in Rhodes until grade 7, after which he moved to Ethelbert to complete grades eight to eleven. His final year he moved to Winnipeg to complete his grade 12 at St. Paul’s College. After attending the University of Winnipeg and getting his degree in geology, Ted eventually moved to Vancouver, being employed at Triumph Nuclear Research in 1964.
In 1965 to 1966, Ted decided to travel the world, taking a ship over the Pacific, landing finally in Australia where he spent over a year. Ted had many humorous stories of his travels, and remembered his time overseas fondly. On returning to Canada, he spent several months helping his parents build their new home on the family farm in Rhodes, after which he moved to Edmonton AB, promptly landing a job in 1968 working for the University of Alberta in medical research, contributing to several articles which were published in the New England Journal of Medicine.
In 1966, Ted met his future wife Shirley (nee Evasiuk) of Sifton, MB. They married in 1971, joking that they wanted enough children to make up a hockey team, eventually making that a reality. In 1978, they moved back to the Ethelbert MB area, building a house and farm in the Boyan district, 2 miles from where Ted grew up, wanting to raise their children out of the city, and closer to their families. Over the next 6 years, Ted transitioned from working in Alberta, to farming, logging and taking over his father’s trapline in the Duck Mountains. Ted loved the land in and around the Duck Mountains, and spent much of his time becoming a local expert on its natural and human history. He combed the land for artifacts, fossils and native plants, especially wildflowers.
Ted was a natural storyteller and was well known for his sense of humour. Ted always said family came first, and lived this principle. He never lost his love of travel, especially loading all the kids up in the van in the summer, and taking road trips down south through the “old west”. Ted was proud of his Ukrainian heritage and background and had an extensive knowledge of local history and families. Each ‘drive around the block’ was liberally peppered with memories of who lived where, and anecdotes of and stories of times gone by.
Left to mourn is his wife of 53 years Shirley; children Richard (Kathleen), Jennifer, Christopher, Katherine (Derek), and Gregory; grandson Jasper; brother Jerry (Margaret), sister Gloria Joliet (Ron), sister-in-law Ruth; and numerous members of his extended family. Ted is predeceased by his parents, Fred and Anne Pachkowski, and brother Larry.
Memorial donations may be made to CancerCare Manitoba, or to the charity of one’s choice.
Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, January 8, 2025 at 11:00 am at Sneath-Strilchuk Family Care Centre (3 Riverside Rd. Dauphin, MB). Interment will follow the service at Rhodes Ukrainian Catholic Cemetery (Ethelbert, MB).
This service will be live streamed for those who cannot attend.
