Sylvia Matheson Obituary
We are very saddened to announce the passing of Sylvia Matheson on Wednesday at the Chinook hospice in Calgary.
Sylvia was born in Henfield, Sus England on August 27, 1946, to William and Dorothy Betty Richards to join her older Sister Janet. She loved growing up in the little village of Poynings at the foot of the Sus Downs. After various jobs at a local pottery, at the Brighton fire Brigade and at Jordan and Cook she emigrated to Canada in 1974. Securing a full-time secretarial job at Shell Canada in the land department she “chatted up” a young geologist in the “lift” who was immediately smitten. On December 23 she married Greg Matheson, that young geologist.
After being told spouses could not work in the same department, she and Greg decided they could live happily on one income and Sylvia began a happy period of her life.
Sylvia loved to go to the gym, come home, bike around the Glenmore reservoir, come home and go to the Rockyview hospital. She was a volunteer extraordinaire, doing several different jobs from bookcart, to senior’s rec therapy and editing the volunteer newsletter. She always said she got far more back than she gave. She remained good friends with several fellow volunteers to this day.
Rheumatoid arthritis finally stopped all of that after about 20 years. In the meantime, Sylvia and Greg welcomed Aaron John Matheson, born March 3, 1988, to our house and “cat or two” over the years.
She suffered many health issues over the years but just like the Eveready bunny, she just kept going and going.
About 2002 Greg & Sylvia discovered Playa Del Carmen Mexico and small hotel there. For more than 20 years they went once or sometimes twice a year, becoming friends with all the staff and many repeat guests that we are still in touch with today.
She loved Mexico and mostly the Mexican people there.
At home she turned a rather barren property into a colorful English type garden with also about 70 pots & planters full of flowers.
Sylvia made friends easily and was always interested in their stories, sharing joy and sorrow with them and many laughs. This was constantly on display within her community and the many neighbors who became family to her.
Sylvia loved our many cats over the years adopting (or being adopted by) them to our current boy SAM.
Aaron Married Randi Cleaver, and we now have two very loved grandchildren, Rylan 12 and Brielle 7. We are lucky they live in Calgary and saw them often.
She is survived by her Husband of 47 years Greg, Son Aaron and family, Sister and brother-in-law in England, Janet and Brian Clout and their son Simon, best childhood friends Janice Jose and Linda and her cousin Linda and Derek Newman.
She is also survived by Greg’s brothers and families, Neil and Judy of Stratford Ontario and their three daughters Flora, Anne and Margaret, and Ross and Mary Beth of Jupiter Florida.
We would like to thank the many medical people that have looked after Sylvia for so long. Dr. Bochu, Dr. Congly, Dr Thompson, Dr. Watson, Sandy Anderson and Leah Willis among many others. Sylvia requested no funeral or service, but we plan to have a Celebration of Life later this year. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Calgary Humane Society in her honor.
My English Bird has flown one last flight.
