It is with heavy hearts and great sadness that we announce the passing of Stuart Hughes, a beloved husband, father, and friend. Stuart passed away peacefully in his sleep on January 21, 2025, at Baycrest Hospital in Toronto, at the age of 76.
Stuart was born on August 1, 1948, in Liverpool, England, to Sonny and Nancy Hughes (née McAvoy). He is lovingly remembered by his devoted wife, Mary McMahon; his cherished son, Paul Hughes and his mother Rosa Sosin; his sister, Barbara MacMillan (Ken); and his nieces, Laura and Catherine, as well as his nephew, Michael.
Stuart attended St. George’s Elementary School in Liverpool before emigrating to Canada with his family in April 1961. The family moved to Toronto, where Stuart attended Beverley Heights Middle School and graduated from Downsview Secondary School.
At 18, Stuart joined the Royal Canadian Air Force, serving his country for two years. He then embarked on a varied and fulfilling career, holding roles such as delivering furniture for Leon’s with his friend Brian O’Hara, selling real estate, working at the Ford plant in Oakville with his friend Grant Volkers, and delivering products for Safety Clean. Later, Stuart became a proud member of IATSE Local #873 as a driver, eventually rising to the roles of Captain and Transportation Coordinator.
Stuart formed deep and lasting bonds with his colleagues at IATSE. He often shared captivating stories about the people he worked with and the connections he built in “Hollywood North.” He spoke fondly of the talented actors he met and the remarkable experiences they shared.
A devoted Toronto Maple Leaf’s fan, Stu took great joy in cheering on his favorite team. He even coached his son Paul during his hockey years, and they shared many conversations about the previous night’s game, often humorously referring to the opponents as the “Bad Guys.”
Fishing was a lifelong passion for Stu, starting in his youth with his father and continuing with his son. Some of his most cherished memories were of fishing trips with three generations of his family. Stu also loved vintage cars and could easily identify the year, make, and model of any classic car that passed by.
Stu lived a life rich with purpose, passion, and love for his family and friends. His adventurous spirit, humor, and warmth touched everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.
With us forevermore, dear Stuart. You will be deeply missed by all who knew you.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Stuart’s memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
A celebration of life for Stuart will be held and announced at a later date.
