Stelios Christofilakis Obituary
Stelios was born December 20, 1943 in Stephania, Lakonia, Greece, to Dimitrios and Ioanna Christofilakis. He was the third of nine kids. After his military service in Greece, he decided to move to Canada to be with his sister Maria. In 1967, the year the Leafs won their last Stanley Cup he moved to Toronto.
Stelios had many jobs in Toronto, he was a cook, he worked for Maple Leaf Foods, and for a long time he worked as a cab driver for the Toronto Airport. Stelios was the life of the party whenever he was at the Blue Sky Bar, but he wanted to settle down. Across the street from the Blue Sky was a mechanics shop where he took his taxi. There, he met Nick Krigos, who introduced Stelios to his sister in law Dimitra.
In 1972 he married Dimitra and together they had three children: Joanne (Giannoula), Dimitrios, and Stacey (Stratigoula). They built a life in Toronto but in 1989 they decided to move to Olds Alberta.
Stelios was a legend in Olds, earning the nickname “Farmer”. You would always hear him driving up and down the streets of Olds with his Greek music blaring going to wash his car, or visiting every Greek owned restaurant in and around Olds. Sometimes when he was really celebrating you could catch him in the middle of the dance floor at the Hay City Saloon Greek dancing.
While in Alberta he owned and operated restaurants. He loved to cook, but not at home as he didn’t like to bring his work home with him.
When he was not working, he loved to spend time with his family and loved randomly showing up at one of his kids homes and asking if the coffee was ready. He also loved to take his grandkids to the Dollar Store for some treats.
The last couple years of his life he was in a care home; the most recent was at the Olds Hospital LTC. On Thursday February 20, 2025, after his lunch Stelios was tired and wanted to lay down. Stelios left this world doing what he loved doing the most, taking a nap.
Stelios is predeceased by his wife Dimitra and his parents, Dimitrios and Ioanna Christofilakis, and two brothers. He is survived by his siblings; daughters Joanne (Chris) and Stacey; son Dimitrios (Nicole); grandchildren Alexis, Phillip, Aletheia, and Calliope; his fur grandkids Priya, and Roxi; as well as many extended family and friends.
Prayer Service will be held at Evan J Strong Funeral Service South (5502 2 Street SW) on Wednesday, February 26, 2025 at 5:30 p.m. Funeral Service will be held at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church (1 Tamarac Crescent SW) on Thursday, February 27, 2025 at 10:00 a.m.
