Sonny Manraj, at the age of 78, passed away on 22 February 2025 peacefully at home in Winnipeg.
Sonny was born in Trinidad and was the first son born of 8 children to Nanan and Popti Manraj.
As a young boy, he was known to be quiet but with a little mischievous streak including sneaking mangos from his grandmother’s tree and secretly going to the movies rather than Hindi lessons.
He moved to Winnipeg to study accounting at the University of Manitoba in 1971. In Winnipeg, he met his wife Anne-Marie and went on to have 3 children: Trisha in 1979, Anik in 1981, and Eric in 1983. They moved into their newly built home on Strand Circle where Sonny loved to be.
Sonny had a long career at VIA Rail Canada where he continued to work even after obtaining his university degree. He worked on board VIA in a variety of positions until his retirement at the age of 65. He was well known as a hardworking, happy, outgoing worker who was famous for bringing his homemade hot sauce for everyone to enjoy.
Sonny was always very welcoming and would warmly greet everyone like a friend. While he was a man of few words, his love language was food. He loved cooking for family and friends. When he cooked, he cooked big and made sure everyone was stuffed. He was especially known for his Trinidadian food (with roti and homemade apple kuchela on the side), BBQs, Christmas cake, homemade cinnamon buns and his grandkid’s favorite apple crisp. He was always the last one to sit down to a meal after ensuring everyone had all they could possibly need, serving with a hearty smile. He took great pride in his role as a host.
In addition to the jungle of indoor plants at Strand, Sonny also cherished his backyard garden. He especially enjoyed growing all sorts of fruits and vegetables, nurturing the plants from seeds to monster plants and beautiful flowers (perhaps something learned from his father who was a gardener). He happily shared his plants with friends and family and they came to rely on him for his green apples, hot peppers and tomato plants. Other odd hobbies included filing taxes for family and friends (where he still made all the calculations by hand) and fixing small appliances. Time spent at Albert Beach was also very much treasured where he loved to cook and play Cribbage and cards with family.
While he was a real ‘home’ boy, he also enjoyed traveling to see his adored family in the US, Trinidad and Europe. He will be remembered as kind, loved to laugh and make others laugh and having a great time.
Sonny joins in heaven his parents Nanan and Popti, his brother Sohan, his brother-in-law Toy, his niece Gina and his nephew David.
He will be greatly missed by many including: his wife Anne-Marie; his children Trisha (Esteban), Anik (Sebastian), Eric (Laura); his grandchildren Miles and Miguel, Natalie and Matthew; his sisters/brothers Shanti (Paramanand), Salmatee (Lawton), Sita , Bally ( Asha), Mankard (Gloria), Vijayanti (Mohanlall); his many nieces and nephews; and very dear friends.
