Sif Elizabeth Olinder Kadak
25 Dec 1937- 22 Dec 2024
Sif was born in Gothenburg (Goteborg), Sweden on Christmas Day, second born twin sister with Evy, to Knut & Margot (Gustafson) Olinder and to older brother Rune. Mom loved swimming in Lake Harlanda tjarn, which was close to her childhood home, from an early age. She kept that love her whole life, later at Lake Whatcom with her daughters.
Mom immigrated to Australia from Sweden when she was 15 in 1953 with her beloved family. Her Father Knut was a talented carpenter and home builder and felt that Australia offered many more opportunities for his family. They settled well in their home in Canberra & a vacation home in Braidwood with some farm animals and a happy lifestyle there.
Mom met our Dad at a local Sydney church and they married on the 22nd June 1957 in Chatswood, Sydney. Mom was 19 ½ years old, she was always so happy to tell us her age then. Dad adored her blonde, blue-eyed, Swedish beauty. They were in love with each other for the rest of their lives, 61 years of wedded bliss, until Dad passed in March 2019.
Mom & Dad immigrated to Vancouver, Canada in February 1966 with their 3 daughters at the time, Christine, Ingrid and Anne. Karen was born in 1968 in North Vancouver. Mom & Dad had just planned to come over for 5 years, but they loved the life they had created together and the community of friends who became family as well to us. Mom’s official occupation as per her 1966 Australian passport read “Home Duties”. Mom & Dad lived in North Vancouver in the same home for 45 years and then moved to Qualicum Beach in 2011 to downsize and be closer to Karen’s young family.
Mom’s many passions included serving in her beloved Hillside Baptist Church in North Vancouver for 45 years. Mom and Dad served as deacons as well as hosting Marriage Enrichment seminars. She also loved just knocking on the doors of her friends and neighbours and having long visits. She loved shopping and thrifting, she could spend the whole day shopping and then tell us all about her ‘treasures’ when she got home. Above all, Mom loved God and her Family and her Friends. She will always be remembered as kind, caring and loving to all.
Mom & Dad had many friends and family from all over the world, having lived on 3 continents in their lifetime. Mom valued all these friendships and kept in touch over the years and had many visitors in their home. Mom loved people and would happily spend hours talking on the phone to whoever wanted to call her, or to visit with them.
Mom travelled back to Australia and Sweden as much as she could, with Dad, Evy or on her own to visit her family there. They were always close to her thoughts and her heart. Mom had a Heart for God and children and all people.
Mom & Dad enjoyed spending time with their family, whom they treasured, loved and adored with all their hearts:

Ingrid, Kelly, Ryan, Melissa, Katie, Brennan, Erica & Scott
Anne, Peter, Alana, Andrea, Alan & Piper
Karen, Paul, Mary, Joe, Sam, Ruth, Cameron, Haley, Annalissa, Andrew, Lydia & Linnea
And all of our many pets over the years!
Dad retired from BC Hydro in 1988, so they had lots of time to travel together to Britain, a Panama Canal cruise, Estonia, Sweden, Australia and more. Mom also enjoyed the Norwegian Lights on a cruise with her sister Evy, as well as many other places.
Mom & Dad celebrated their 40th (1997) and 50th (2007) wedding anniversaries at Hillside Baptist Church by preaching and Bible reading, then having a celebration luncheon afterwards. Peter & Sif lived with JOY, Jesus first, Others second, and You (themselves) Last. Their lives revolved around their family and their church community. We are thankful for their lives and service to Hillside and the history they were a part of.
Mom attended Trinity Western University as a mature student after her daughters were all grown up. She studied psychology and took great pride in her assignments and was so happy to be able to attend university, something she had always wanted to do. She developed a hunger to learn and read many books during this time.
Mom and Dad did Homestay for many years when they were empty nesters. They treated their students like their own and kept in touch with many over the years. They were a special part of our family as well.
Mom was always very present and hands-on as a Mother and Grandmother. We daughters have fond memories of her driving us to swim club at the local rec Centre in the early morning before school. Mom would drop us off and then sleep in the car while we swam. We would then tap on the window when we were ready to be driven home. Our friends also have happy memories of Mom driving us all to church and evening church events. Some of my friends to this day can recite Psalm 23 thanks to our dedicated and caring Mom.
Our ‘at home’ birthday parties were always a big success, with the neighbourhood kids & friends all enjoying the sweet treats provided by Mom. Mom & Dad always invited and welcomed whoever needed a family to be with at Christmas and other holidays to our home. I know this is because many families did this for us when we first arrived in Canada as immigrants, and Mom & Dad were very happy and grateful to pay this forward with such caring people.
Mom was a cherished Wife, Mother, Sister, Daughter, Auntie, Friend to Many, Grandmother and Great-grandmother. She was quick to show love and kindness always. Words to describe Mom are: Loving, faithful, passionate, kind, caring, generous, grace-filled, wonderful, thoughtful, understanding and more.
Mom’s absence on earth will be keenly felt, but her spirit will live on in the hearts of those who loved her. Her legacy of love and strength will continue to inspire and guide her family for generations to come. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

A very special thank you to all the Angels on Earth at Eagle Park Care Facility, where Mom lived for the last 4 years of her life. These lovely caregivers, nurses and doctors all gave us such peace of mind, knowing Mom had all her needs met and more. They always made our family feel very welcomed and cared for.
