Obituary of Shirley Mae Russell
Russell, Shirley – It is with great sadness that the family of Shirley Russell announce her passing on Saturday, February 22, 2025 at the Saint John Regional Hospital Centre. Shirley was born in Saint John, on January 17, 1936 to Hilda (Doucette) and Wilfred Merrick. Shirley was a very strong, self-sacrificing and loving mother. Married for 72 years to a very loving husband. She was a talented seamstress that could make wedding dresses. She had a wonderful life with many years of supporting her husband in the music industry. She was a great supporter of live music. Shirley was very tech savvy, from creating country music videos for her dear husband to making CD’s to share Rick’s country music with others. Her secret passion was to be a sculptor. Shirley, besides being a supportive wife and strong, loving mother of 11 children, always brought home a paycheque, working for several companies over her lifetime. Her first job started with The Atlantic Sugar Refinery. She was also employed by Malteque Shrimp Ltd., Famous Players Ltd., The Province of New Brunswick, and her last job of many years, as a custodian for the New Brunswick School District.
Shirley is survived by her loving husband, Julian “Rick” Russell, her children, Larry (Ellie) Russell, Linda (Mike) Richardson, Randy (Ann) Russell, Julie Smith, Rick (JoAnn) Russell, Cheryl (the late David) Addison, John Russell, Bill (Michelle) Russell, Jaqueline Russell and Jeanette (Aubrey) MacLeod, her siblings, Pat (Linda) Merrick, John (Linda) Merrick and Florence (the late Ed) Parks, along with numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Shirley is predeceased by her parents, Hilda and Wilfred Merrick, her son, Wesley Russell, and her siblings, Joseph, Richard, Joan, Willie, Mary and Evelyn.
A Memorial Service will take place at Kennebecasis Community Funeral Home on Monday, March 3rd at 11:00AM. Arrangements are under the care of Kennebecasis Community Funeral Home, 152 Pettingill Road, Quispamsis (506-849-2119). In lieu of flowers, remembrances of Shirley may be made to Diabetes Canada or a charity of the donor’s choice.
